15 Children’s Books That Help Build Self-Esteem

Written by Sara Langer

Self-esteem is not something we are born with, but it begins to develop in infancy and grows slowly with time. For babies and toddlers, self-esteem builds through displays of love and affection, positive attention, and care. As they learn to do things on their own and develop new skills and independence, their self-esteem grows. Positive reinforcement, praise, or even a simple smile can all help instill self-esteem in toddlers. Children with high self-esteem feel liked and accepted, confident, proud, and they believe in themselves. Some children will naturally be more confident than others, but there are many things parents can do to help nurture their children’s self-esteem. Reading and introducing your children to a variety of stories and experiences is a great way to foster many different skills and characteristics, including self-esteem. When children hear stories of other children being confident, facing their fears, and being true to themselves, it can inspire and empower them to do the same. With that in mind, we compiled 15 childrens books about self esteem that include great examples of using confidence to overcome challenges while staying true to one’s authentic self.
