We happily welcome summer here at Mother—ice-cold drinks on the porch, sundresses and sandals, days spent with the kids at the beach, and that extra dose of vitamin D! We’ve rounded up some of our top picks to slide into the season. From cute suits to get your suntan on, to a practical (and pretty) citronella candle to help keep the bugs at bay, here’s what’s on our summertime Want/Need list!

Katie’s picks:

“This print by one of S.F.’s coolest artist mamas, Rachel Kaye, perfectly describes what I’d like to be doing all summer long.” Rachel Kaye Sunbather Print, $50, Mollusk Surf Shop.

“High-waisted bikinis are currently my jam. They disguise my little mama-pouch, plus, they just feel more refined and fashion-y.” Holly Bikini, $60, Mollusk Surf Shop.

“I have a bazillion 2-year-old birthday parties coming up. And, in the spirit of planning ahead, I bought a bunch of inexpensive felt zip-up bags in the shape of cute animals at the International Gift Fair a few months ago. I plan on stuffing each of them with something fun, like these cool neon pencils, for easy $15 gifts.” Neon Pencil Set, $13, Karen Kimmel.

“These ‘Peace Towels’ by local mother and artist Lena Corwin are so cool and ideal for Ocean Beach excursions. Plus, $5 from each sale goes to a great cause.” Peace Towel, $68, Peace Towel.

“What’s summer without a glass of rose in your hand? My friends started this great new label out of the Central Coast. So good and the bottle ain’t bad to look at either.” Halcyon Rose, $25, Halcyon Wines.

“In my past life as an editor at Refinery29, I tried a bunch of locally made cleanses back to back and the CanCan Cleanse was my hands-down favorite. The owner (also a mother) makes the most delicious juices, nut milks, and soups. I’m not sure I believe in detoxing via a juice-only diet, but incorporating more nutrient-packed juice into my life is definitely a current goal!” CanCan Cleanse 4-Pack, $39, CanCan Cleanse.

“It took me over two years to do it, but I finally took my first 24+ hours away from my son. It was great to break the seal and I’m ready for lots of short overnight getaways with my husband or my girlfriends. My husband and I stayed at Casa Madrona, in a suite Pink Floyd slept in, and we’ll definitely be back. The views of the bay are stunning.” Casa Madrona in Sausalito, rates start at $419/night, Casa Madrona.

“A friend’s husband turned me onto these little cookbooks that each focus on one type of food—from eggs to broccoli. This one on summer squash is a perfect fit for the season.” Summer Squash Short Stack, $14, Short Stack Editions.

“There’s something so fresh about a white shoe in summer. I’ve seen some cool mamas rocking these kicks at the park. I think it’s time to copy them!” Converse All Star High-Tops, $69.73, Universal Store.

“In the rare chance that I find myself poolside this summer, I would love to take an issue of new-ish magazine Lone Wolf with me. It’s produced in San Francisco, which means lots of bonus points in my book.” Lone Wolf N11, $10, Magazine Stack.

James’ picks:

“As much as I love that summer has finally arrived, the one thing that I don’t love about this season are the pesky mosquitos that try to dine on us for dinner! I found these beautiful ceramic citronella candles to help ban the bugs for good.” White Citronella Candle, $25, Kaufmann Mercantile.

“I can’t wait to smell the new Summer fragrance from Dasein. I fell in love with their scents from past seasons and with notes of cilantro, grapefruit, jasmine, orange blossom, and grass how can you go wrong? Bonus points for being unisex!” Summer Unisex Fragrance, $95, Dasein.

“I am totally in love with this beautiful 14k gold crescent moon necklace from Aili in Brooklyn. It’s small and simple—just how how I like my bling.” Crescent Moon Necklace, $270, Aili Jewelry.

“This book is high on my must-read list because I am a Sonic Youth fan and because Kim Gordon is the ultimate badass. Excited to dive into this one.” Girl In A Band: A Memoir, $19, Amazon.

“Pool (or bath) toys don’t get much cuter than this!” Origami Boat, $15, Fawn Shoppe.

“I’ve put a lot of wear and tear on my hair over the past decade. Now that I am back to my natural color, I need something to treat those dry and damaged ends. I’m hoping this rose intensive hair masque does the trick.” Rose Hair & Scalp Moisturizing Masque, $35, Aesop.

“I’m all about a good one-piece bathing suit. I sported this minimal, navy number while in the Caribbean a couple of weeks ago and will live in it, poolside, all summer long.” One-piece Swimsuit, $102, J.Crew.

“This ultra-soft travel blanket and sleep mask duo is perfect for any jet-setter and high on my list for upcoming travel plans. It gets cold on the airplane, plus, you never know when you’re going to need to block out the light and catch some Z’s.” Travel Set In Alpaca, $195, Need Supply Co.

“We are big about sun-protection in my house—you gotta protect that precious skin! This sun care set from Super Goop is the perfect beach bag staple.” At Play Value Set, $45, Super Goop.

“Culottes are back this season and they don’t get much better than these dreamy, high-waisted, striped ones from the oh-so talented mamas behind Ace & Jig.” Haystack Bay Pant, $230, Mille.
