Our Fall 2016 Editors’ Picks

Written by James Kicinski-McCoy

Yesterday marked the first official day of fall, which means it’s time to put away the shorts and sandals and begin cozying up for the chilly weather ahead. We love all things the new season brings—warm sweaters, boots, curling up with a new book, and the gradual change in temperature. We’ve rounded up some of our top picks for (what seems like) everyone’s favorite season. Take a peek below to see what we’ve been loving and lusting and why!

James’ picks:

“I was sent a sample of the famed and celebrity-loved SK-II Treatment Mask a few months ago. I only received one, so it took me a while to find the right excuse to use it, but I finally did. As skeptical as I was, because these masks are ridiculously expensive, I am now drinking the SK-II Kool-aid. My skin was glowing, felt tighter and smoother, and now I want MORE!”  -SK II treatment sheet masks, $135 for 10, Sephora.

“I fell in love with the prettiest fall dress from Dôen. The color and print are perfect for fall and the cut and fit is so flattering. I plan on wearing it all season long.” -Dôen Dosha Dress in Rust Black Print, $155, Dôen.

“Some girlfriends and I have this little tradition of buying each other new enamel pins in sets of three (one for each!) when we see a great one. It’s the perfect ‘just because’ gift and they look great on jean jackets, purses, you name it! I am a big fan of Maria Ines Gul’s work and ordered this little OK hand just as soon as it was available.” -OK Enamel pin, £6.00, Maria Ines Gul.

“My kids have some of these wooden blocks. They are so beautiful that we keep a set in the living room for display and play.” -100 Piece Building Block Set, $110, Acorn Toy Shop.

“I have been on quite the ‘shoe kick’ lately and love dressing up a simple tee and jeans or jumper with fun flats or heels, my shoe wish list is longer than ever. These blue slip-ons from Vayarta are at the top of it.” -Vayarta in Pigment Blue, $195, Need Supply Co.

“One of my favorite magazines is Apartamento and I have got to get my hands on this new issue. I love the cover art and the articles are always interesting and inspiring!” –Apartamento No. 17, $19.95, Need Supply Co.

“I have hopped onto the apple cider vinegar train and cannot believe how much a simple shot of this strong stuff each morning has contributed to my days. It’s also incredible at killing colds! I was sick earlier this week and added a few extra shots to my routine and was feeling better in no time. More on the powers that ACV holds coming to a Mother article next week.” -Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, $7.15, Amazon.

“Ever since I first started watching Sex And The City, back when I was 20, I have always wanted my very own Carrie necklace. I recently ordered myself one and one for each of my daughters. They arrived a couple of days ago and I am thrilled!” -Name Necklace, starting at £52.00, Anna Lou Of London.

“Now that we are home owners, we are in the process of renovating the house. This place needs quite a bit of work and next up are new bathrooms. We have four and I want to make each one a little fun and unique with different tile, fixtures, and more.” -Bathroom products and accessories, prices vary, Kohler.

“My daughter Plum and I have been on a crepe kick lately. There is this little place right outside of Nashville called The Perch that makes delicious sweet and savory crepes. We want to get a crepe pan to start making our own.” -Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Crepe Pan, $129.95, Amazon.

“My little kids need new sweaters and coats for the chilly weather ahead and I am a sucker for everything from Misha + Puff. The knits and color combinations are always on point.” -North Wind Coat, $198, Misha + Puff.

“I found these vintage earrings that are almost identical to a pair my mom wore when I was a child. I love them so much!” -Vintage Earrings, a lucky find!

Katie’s picks:

“I’ve always loved the story of boundary-breaker Coco Chanel and recently saw this children’s book on a friend’s baby registry. Turns out it’s a part of a wonderful series called Little People, Big Dreams that illustrates the life stories of pioneering women like Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, and Maya Angelou, amongst others. So great for the bookshelves of both little girls and boys.” –Coco Chanel (Little People, Big Dreams), $10.36, Amazon.

“How cool is this solar-powered nightlight, made of recycled card stock, from the MoMa Design Store? You can charge it under the sun during the day and get 5 hours of LED light after dark (thanks to the solar panel stuck to the top). Bonus points: This version is shaped like our actual San Francisco home!” -Casagami Solar Nightlight Townhouse, $14, MoMA Design Store.

“My 3-year-old, Diego, is getting so long and lanky (cue the crying emoji!). Most of the pants out there just don’t fit his tiny little waist, however. These graphic versions by local brand See Sun look like they’ll do the trick of actually staying up and looking super cute!” -Kids Dense Pant, $58, See Sun.

“My home is a full-on superhero-obsession zone at the moment, and we’re also really excited about Halloween approaching. These PJs, by British brand The Bright Co., are great for when October 31st rolls around (I plan on sending Diego to preschool in them!), and will be used to conjure Batman way beyond that.” -Bat PJs, $39, The Bright Co.

“I have been obsessed with the idea of adding some bold prints and color to my bathroom ever since discovering Quiet Town over the last few months. The Brooklyn-based brand (run by a mama and papa) creates the most covetable shower curtains and bathroom rugs out there! The hard part is settling on which one to get.” -The Narlai Coyote Shower Curtain, $198, Quiet Town.

“After a little travel in the beginning of fall, I’m excited to hunker down in the Bay Area and set up some fun family weekend adventures. We recently stayed at The Hideaway in Carmel by the Sea, and it’s an adorable and modern little hotel in the center of the city—you can walk to the beach and all of the local shops and eateries. They also have a super-sweet and complimentary wine-and-cheese happy hour every night. We’re looking to get back there soon, especially for the kid-friendly event series in honor of Carmel’s centennial in October.” -The Hideaway in Carmel, $220 and up, The Hideaway.

“Thanks to advice from my interior designer friend Katie Martinez and this Lonny article, I’ve been so inspired by the idea of installing graphic tile around the fireplace in our living room. Ideally something close to this design, which I spotted on the bathroom floor of the aforementioned Hideaway in Carmel.”

“I already have one pair of show-stopping Bryr clogs in nude and neon orange that I get a ridiculous amount of compliments on. I love the style and fit so much that I’m itching to get another pair in a more neutral tone.” -Miranda Peep-Toe High Heel, $258, Bryr.

“I love a good jumpsuit, and this sexy version by S.F. brand Kamperett can be worn sans shirt/bra when the mood strikes. So unique! It might look familiar from its appearance in this profile.” Bilie Overall Jumpsuit, $365, Kamperett.

“I adore the autumnal tone of this beautiful and easy bra by California brand Pansy.” -Pansy Bra In Rust, $48, Need Supply.

“Tis the season for holiday baking! I’m so excited to be taking a cookie-decorating class with Jen of Batter Bakery in mid-October. Stocking up on cookie cutters is also essential. Williams-Sonoma has a lot of cute versions, from classic seasonal shapes to Star Wars characters!” -Williams-Sonoma Fall Copper Cookie Cutter Set, $14.95, Williams-Sonoma.
