“[Life] without a family might look really great, but it’s not so great long-term. Having a family is so important. I think not being so self-centered that it’s all about you and not other people is not the right attitude at all. You have to have that nucleus of a family around you. I think it’s really important. Children give you a balance. Not that you can balance your life, it’s so hard. I kind of lost focus on a husband after 27 years, and he ran away. When women say they can have it all, it’s hard to have it all. But it’s also important to have as much of it as you can. …I only had one child, which was stupid. I should have had more children. I love children and I would have liked to have a much bigger family than I have. I have to rely on my nieces and nephews to fill in, instead of my own children.”

-Martha Stewart, mother to Alexis, to Cherrybombe, 2016.
