Meet Miko Bowen & Her Blended Family Of Six Kids

When we think of the title Super Mom, plenty of deserving women come to mind. Today’s profile highlights one mama who most definitely deserves a cape all her own. Say hello to Miko Bowen, a blogger and full-time mother (and step-mother) to six kids whose ages range from 6 to 21!

With four kids living in their Utah mountain home, and her two oldest daughters out our their own, we wanted to know just how she does it, and how on earth she manages to look like she stumbled upon the fountain of youth! Lucky enough, we were able to catch up with the blended-family of eight, all under the same roof, while the two eldest girls were visiting from college.

"No, not really at all. My husband is one of two and I am an only child. I was raised solely by my dad who was only 18 when he had me. He was one of seven children and his youngest sister is just nine years older than me. I grew up around them and think that sparked my interest in having a large family. My husband Will came from a smaller family who was not very close. He never really got to know his cousins or anything, and always longed for a big family."

"I think the best thing is that there is always so much love, laughter, and fun going on in our home. For the kids, there was always somebody around to play with and always someone around to help, whether it was with homework or to help teach one how to tie their shoes. It’s definitely like having your own little village and I think all of my kids have really enjoyed that. For me, the very best part about having a house full of kids is there's not a day where I don't feel overwhelmingly loved."

"I would say, making sure that I'm giving each of them enough of me individually. Making sure that none of them feel like they get lost in the shuffle."

"Yes, it's absolutely a priority. When You have a lot of children, I think it's really important to spend solo time with them, even if it's just taking one on a quick grocery store run. Really, spending any time alone with them, whether it's a couple minutes or a few days, to let them know how important they are is pretty much everything. I’ve made it a tradition to do special one-on-one dates around Valentine's Day each year, and it’s something that I think we all look forward to. As far as daily/weekly individual time, it's a quick minute in the morning helping them fix their hair, or a note left in their lunch. Little snippets of time for each, so they know how important they are to you does wonders."

"I'm not sure I really remember my life before becoming a mother. I had my first so young (I was 18) and had just graduated high school about six-months before I had her. So, my life before Taylor was pretty much my childhood. I can remember the switch, though. From being 18-years-old and life being about me and what I wanted, to being about what was best for my daughter and us, together. There really hasn't been any bad that I can think of, since being a mother was really all that I had wanted to be."

"When we realized we would be bringing our families together, our children were 8, 7, 6, and 4. At that point in time, we didn’t think that we would add our own into the mix. We felt our hands were pretty full. But as time progressed, we realized that we wanted and needed to have one together—one that could tie us all together even more. Once we had Liam, we soon realized that two would be better! Liam and Liliana have done just what we thought they would. They have completed this family to make us whole. Now we have ours, all of them, and we couldn’t be more happy."

"We knew from the beginning that we would face trials and opposition with blending our families. We had both dated a number of people over the years, but when we found each other we just knew. Our ideas of family and life were forged by my previous marriage, and Will's previous experiences, and they were strangely consistent. We both wanted the same things for a family and our ideas were so much of the same. We met opposition from all sides. Those that maybe thought they had a right to an opinion and those that clearly didn’t, but wanted to give it anyhow—'she has too many kids,' 'he may not be right,' etc.—but, we both knew that even though I had mine and he had his, it didn’t matter. In our family, there would be no distinction, they would be ours."

"My parenting style has changed over the years. I was definitely more intense and wanted strive for perfection when I was younger. I quickly realized that was not going to work for myself or my children. So, I'd say that I am more of a laid-back parent now. I'm pretty open to letting my children make their own choices and decisions, whether those choices are good or bad. And if I see them starting to go down the wrong path, I have no problem stepping in and having an adult conversation with them to let them understand the consequences of their choices. Also, I'm definitely not afraid to throw a few F-bombs here and there, if needed."

"Yes! It definitely happens for me, now. Although, when my kids were younger it was kind of far and few between. But now that my kids are older, I have more free time. I wish I would've made 'me time' a priority when my children were younger. I was such a young mom and I didn't realize how important it was to make some time for myself. Even if it's just time alone in the bathroom at night, washing your face, getting ready for bed, and reflecting on the day, having some solitude does wonders for the soul."

: "How much love you are capable of. I remember after having my first, she was all that I thought I ever wanted. I couldn't imagine loving anybody else as much I loved her, and so I almost didn't want to have more kids. But then, once you have another, and another, and another, it's amazing how each time your love just continues to grow. That motherhood love—there is nothing like it."

"I remember someone telling me that once you have three, you can have ten, and I truly agree with that! I would say that going from two to three is the biggest challenge. But after that, it really doesn't ever change. There have been times when all of our kids were still living at home, growing up, and our four big kids would each have like two or three friends over at the same time. Truthfully, it was no different than having our six at home, versus 20—and it still isn't to this day."

"Watching my children grow and seeing who they become as adults has been one of the most exciting things about motherhood, for sure. I can't wait to see what they do with their lives, who they marry, and if they’ll have children and how’ll they be as parents! All of it is just the most exciting thing to me."

"The obvious is one of them getting seriously hurt—that would be horrible. But, I'm also nervous about being a mother that is not doing my job fully and helping to put out useful and purposeful humans into our society. I think it's so important for us to really recognize that we are raising this next generation. It's on us to help determine what is going to happen with our world and the little ones that we bring to this earth."

: "Our home was built in 1950. We purchased it about a year-and-a-half ago and have been under renovations since we moved in. We have completed everything but a couple of the bathrooms and the basement. We have an acre of property that is full of mature trees, a great garden area, and a very unique indoor pool—our kids' favorite part. We purchased the house with the purpose of having a really great space for all of our children, who are quickly turning into adults, to come home to, to bring their spouses, and eventually their own children, too!"

: "I'm pretty minimalist when it comes to kids stuff. We have always had a playroom in each home we’ve lived in. I really think that giving your children their own space where they can explore and create is important. I feel like every child needs a separate play space where toys belong. We tend to keep most of the toys out of the bedrooms, so that their rooms can be more of a place for reading and rest, plus it helps keep them more tidy."

: "Definitely the kitchen. We are a family that loves to eat, and I think a huge thing that sold us on this house was the kitchen. it's quite large. I have a big island where six can easily sit around and morning for breakfast. It's just a really good space for us to come together and chat and snack and eat and hang out. It really is the heart of our home, as cliché as that sounds."

"The secret is so many kids! Really, I employ them all to help. This home doesn't function on just the adults, alone. It's a full on family affair. It has definitely gotten easier to keep a tidy home as my children have gotten older, but really, we have always lived by the philosophy that many hands make light labor. We also make it a habit to do 2-3 big clean outs every year. We don't keep a lot of clutter, so keeping things tidy is much easier."

"My oldest is Taylor Sage. I wanted to name her Sage, but everyone, especially my dad, talked me out of it. One day at work, I heard the name Taylor, and knew that was it! I still sneak Sage in there, and my nickname for her is TaySage. Since I didn't birth Addison, I don’t have a story behind her name, but I am so grateful that both her mom and Will came up with one so darling because it fits her perfectly! Mathew Jason is named after my very dear friend from when I moved from Spokane to Seattle. He was so kind to me after moving to a new city. I'll never forget his friendship. Mathew's middle name is Jason. It's his dad's first name. It's a tradition in his dad's family to have the first name of the father as the middle name of the oldest son. Aden Eric is a name that both his dad and I really loved. The spelling of Aden came from a graffitied wall in Australia that his dad saw when he was there for a few years, and it stuck with him. Eric is my dad's first name, and I really wanted to carry on his importance with one of my children’s names. Liam’s real name is actually Arthur William the V, a family name. When we were trying to come up with a nickname, we couldn't figure out what to do because his grandpa goes by Art, and his Dad goes by Will. My mother-in-law actually brought up Liam one day when we realized that it’s the back half of William, and it suits him well. Liliana was a last-minute name. We had planned most of my pregnancy to name her Evie. But after she was born, Will felt strongly that she needed to have a family name. Liliana came from combining my grandmothers name, Lili, and my mother-in-law's name, Anne. Today, different members of the family call her Evie and some call her Liliana. However, she absolutely does not like her name to be shortened to Lili, and she will correct you if you do. Ha!"

"It is so good, but also stabs me in the heart sometimes. You know how everyone says 'It goes so fast'? They aren’t lying. I know when you’re in the thick of it, up late with a colicky baby, or have toddlers pulling at your pant legs you think it’s never going to end, but that time is really so short. It has gone by so fast, and it's really hard for me to accept that my daughters are full grown women, still, even though it's been over two years since they moved out on their own. When they're home and when I see them, I still look at them as little girls. So, it's been a big adjustment to also see them as adults. Making the switch to parenting an adult and having those really big talks can be tough, too. But what makes it easy is that they are both making some really amazing choices with their lives and I just couldn't be more proud."

"Stay close to them, but not too close. Ha! You've got to give them breathing room to grow and figure themselves out. It's such a big step and an important time in their lives. Personally, being a mother that hovers is not something I want to do. I do try and send a simple text, here and there, just to check in and let them know that they're on my mind. I don't go a day without thinking about my girls."

: "I do! We live in a great neighborhood and have such helpful neighbors and friends. Also, my husband's parents are just a couple of miles from us and they are always willing and able to help us out when needed."

"An ideal day would start by my little kids climbing into bed with us like they do every morning. We try to have a good morning cuddle before we head down to the kitchen to have coffee and breakfast as a family. Then we would hang out together and play games or swim in the pool or work in the yard or garden. During the winter, we can be found on the mountain skiing. I think the best part of the day for me is having dinner together. I love it!"

: "Veggie stirfry is a common quick option for us. I always have a lot of fresh veggies in the fridge, so that's something pretty fast and easy to pull together. I usually have some sort of fish or seafood on hand. Even if it's in the freezer, it only takes a few minutes to defrost and cooks up in a jiff. Fish and veggies are a pretty regular family dinner option around here. That or I'll throw some crackers or sliced baguette with meats and cheeses on the counter with a fresh salad. It's kind of my go-to, anytime meal."

"Date night! Make your marriage a priority. Try to sneak in a date every week. And if your babies are little or you can't find a sitter, try to take time to be alone as a couple, even for a few minutes for some one-on-one discussion. Really talk to each other—talk about your day, how you're feeling, or reflect on the weekend. You don’t have to spend money to date your spouse, but if you choose to, it’s money well spent, because the reality is that your children will grow up, move on, and move out, but your marriage is something that needs to be cherished to make it last."

"I’m embarrassed to say it, but I have never read a parenting book. When Will and I got married, we went to premarital counseling because we found it to be important to find a way to make sure that we were blending our families to the best of our abilities. We learned so much and have continued to use the tools we learned throughout our everyday life. It's been nearly 13 years of raising our children together and I cannot recommend it enough, whether it's before you get married or after you start having children, sometimes having another voice there to help you understand each other better and understand your children better is really all you need."

"The most beautiful piece of advice that I ever got was something along the lines of: don't listen to those that will tell you to put your baby down. That you spoil them if you hold them, or to not let them sleep with you. Instead hold them as much as you want, let them sleep with you, and love on them as much as they want. To soak up all of those little moments, because it truly goes by so fast. The time we have with our children is so short, so embrace it and enjoy it."

"Unfortunately, no. I had a scare about a year-and-a-half ago where my doctors thought that I had ovarian cancer and had to undergo a hysterectomy, so it's just not an option for us any longer. We’ve often talked about the possibility of adoption, although my big kids keep telling me that it may not be too long before I could be Grandma. Gasp! So, I think at this point in our lives we are just going to hang onto that."

"I like to keep things easy and simple. I am not typically a fussy dresser. You can find me in neutral colors spring, summer, and fall. I'm usually wearing a dress—I think they're comfortable. It's nice to not have something with a waistband. Outside of that, you'll find me in jeans, boots, and a comfy shirt with a cozy cardigan. I don't think my style has changed with motherhood. I think it's just evolved over time as I've gotten older. I tend to grab for what feels comfortable, but still looks simple and stylish."

"I normally shop online. Especially as I've gotten older. One of my favorite brands is Ace & Jig. "I don't have a major beauty routine. I definitely lean more on the natural side. I just recently start taking care of my skin about six months ago. I've never been one to really care for it and I’m embarrassed to say that I used to wash my face with good old bar of basic soap. Now, I use Acure Brightening Facial Scrub about 3-4 times a week, followed by Sulwhasoo Snowise Brightening Serum, and then Olay Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream everyday. I love the SPF it has in it and how light it feels on my face. On days that I don't use the face scrub, I use Damn Good Face Wash, The Works. It's seriously one of my favorite products. Oh, and I can't leave out the Tinkle Eyebrow Razors. I don't use them for my eyebrows, but I do use them to shave my face. It takes away the peach fuzz and is also a great exfoliator. If you haven't tried it, you definitely should."

"I'm always working on getting a good wellness routine in place. When my children were younger, I spent a lot of time at the gym. I used that as my 'me-time'. As the kids got older and when I got divorced, I opened my own yoga studio. Wellness has always been a big part of my life and I've let it go over these last few years because of some health conditions. After my hysterectomy, thankfully, I didn't have cancer, but what was discovered was that I had stage-four endometriosis that has spread beyond my abdominal cavity and into my lungs, spinal cord, and brain stem. So, I've been told to treat it as an auto-immune disease and focus on helping myself as naturally as I possibly can. This year, I'm focusing on eating really clean—avoiding dairy, grains, and sugar. More or less a clean, carb-free diet will really help me feel a lot better. I'm also grateful for a pool because it's been a great way for me to get some low-impact exercise in."

"I blog, but used to work outside of the home doing both insurance and real estate. I still have my insurance license and my real estate license is currently active. I continually renew them because I want to have that option again once Liliana is at school full-time."

"I was a single parent with my oldest, and it would literally kill me every day when I had to drop her off at daycare. Over the years, I realized that being home was really what I wanted to do. "Yes! It's so funny because I am often asked how I ended up in Utah. I always laugh because I really don't know. It is the very last place that I ever thought I would live, and it was never on my map growing up in Washington. I always thought I would stay in the Pacific Northwest or that I would move to the Northeast. But, now I've lived in Utah longer than I have lived outside of the state, and I feel it's truly my home."

"The community of Utah is such a family oriented state. Growing up in Washington was definitely different. I think Utah is a great place to raise children. Ogden is constantly making top 10 lists of places to live, places to raise a family, and best outdoor city."

"During the spring, summer, and fall would be a bike ride downtown to our local farmer's market, hiking the trails near our home, rock climbing, and just being outside. During the winter, you can find us on the mountain. Will is a big skier, so our family loves it."

"There are some great local restaurants here. Roosters Brewery, The Union Grill, Lucky Slice Pizza, and Tona—it's a wonderful Japanese and sushi place. Waffle Love is fun for dessert or breakfast. During the Summer, there is a local farmers market every Saturday that we love to go to. We have some great museums here, too and there's a Children's Treehouse Museum and Dinosaur Park that we like. We have a vast network of mountain trails, bike trails, and hiking trails around Ogden. It's an outdoor-focused city that's full of small town fun."
