At Home With Costume Designer & New Mama Ayanna Kimani

In today’s profile, you can literally feel the love—which is something we think we could all use right about now. Just seven months ago, costume designer Ayanna Kimani—whose work in film and TV includes collaborating with heavy-hitters like Issa Rae, Jay-Z, and Ava DuVernay—became a mother. And in these images (shot just before California’s state-wide shelter-in-place orders), her adoration for her baby girl Nia is palpable. Seriously, you’ll loose count of all the kisses and snuggles! Bonus points: Ayanna’s beautiful mother Grace makes a guest appearance. Check it all out, as the typically jet-setting mama invites us into her Los Angeles home and we discuss motherhood, infusing Nia’s life with her Kenyan and Jamaican roots, and Ayanna’s currently sweet and slowed down lifestyle—which is serving as a delayed maternity leave of sorts.

Stop! little Nia is sooo cute! I love what Ayanna had to say about her mom. I just sent out a Mother’s day card with the same sentiment. Much respect for the moms! They love us so much, and being one now myself, I feel the same way.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and loved reading about a fellow Jamaican mum. Nia is so very adorable and I love the design of her nursery!
