When we first heard that Colugo was teaming up with clothing company Primary for a limited-edition collection, all we could think of was color! color! color! And who better to take some Colugo x Primary items for a test drive stroll than Anjelika Temple, the most color-obsessed mama we know?! As the co-founder and chief creative office at DIY-minded media company Brit + Co, mulling over hues is a way of life for Anjelika. And, as she explains it to us, her adoration for all things bold and patterned started young, thanks to her Indian parents who steadily embraced the saturated hues of their homeland.
Beyond color, another thing Anjelika is even more obsessed with are her darling daughters—Anokhi, 3 1/2, and Indira, 1—both of whom she is passing down her fondness for bright shades to. The three recently took to the woods near their Marin County, California, home to use the grand redwoods and lush foliage as a backdrop for a fun photoshoot with their brand-new Colugo x Primary goodies.
These goods included the Compact Stroller, which comes in 3 new shades—Sunshine (a bright yellow), Raspberry (a bold magenta), and Tomato (a vibrant orange-red). Perhaps not surprisingly, Anjelika opted for a stroller that featured all-over yellow (yes, even the hardware is vividly painted!). They also tried out the matching Baby Carrier and On-The-Go Organizer (a detachable stroller bag/fanny pack that holds a family’s essentials) in Sunshine, for some really cute matchy-matchy action.
Take a look in our slideshow below, and get to know this inspiring mama who has a personality as bright and vibrant as her style.

"Growing up, I was surrounded by every color under the sun. My parents are both Indian and immigrated to the U.S. in the late ‘60s, bringing with them a love of bright, saturated colors and gorgeous intricate patterns. As a kid, I never even knew that wearing all the colors all the time was an unusual choice! From creating artwork to choosing my clothes every day, I have always been drawn to unconventional combinations and color palettes, and definitely go through obsessive phases with each color. When I lived in San Francisco, I was in a major blue period. I painted all the walls in our apartment various shades of aqua, deep teal, cobalt, wore so much teal and turquoise, got peacock blue dining chairs—the whole nine yards. Ever since moving to 'the country'— a.k.a. the suburbs, but I like to pretend we live in a treehouse—I’ve been into warmer hues like orange, rust, marigold, yellow, and dusty rose."

"Oh wow, the girls really have NO neutrals at all. A few months ago we were doing a photo shoot and they requested that we bring 'basic neutrals' and I came into the shoot completely empty-handed. I think maybe they each have a pair of black leggings and a couple tops that are a white + black pattern (still not exactly neutral). In fact, when people wear neutral or non-patterned/graphic clothes, Anokhi has legit asked, 'Why isn’t there anything on you?' Besides yellow, Anokhi’s favorite 'color' is definitely rainbows."

- "My wardrobe is probably 75% colors/prints and 25% black/white/neutrals. I’ve started to get more into muted tones as of late, but my neutrals are more like sage green, navy blue, pale pink. Oh, and leopard print, y’all. Leopard print is most definitely my neutral of choice."
- "My older daughter Anokhi is beyond obsessed with yellow and calls anything yellow 'my lellow.' It’s one of the first opinions she ever had and she’s really stuck with it! She even tells me that her younger sister Indira’s favorite color is also yellow, while dada’s is blue and mine (assigned by Anokhi) is purple. So, the moment I saw that neon yellow set, I knew it would be a hit with the girls. To me, yellow connotes sunshine, warmth, comfort, and gathering. It feels bright and welcoming."
- "It’s so funny with yellow—I honestly never knew that a primary color could pull me in the way yellow has. It is completely due to my daughter’s deep love of yellow, and I honestly feel grateful that she has opened my eyes to all that yellow has to offer. Silly but true! At the beginning of 2020, I was all about emerald. I felt drawn to deep leafy jungle greens, perhaps connecting green to the idea of a verdant fresh start in a new decade. But to understate it, it’s been a weird year. I’ve found that I’ve strayed away from green and towards warm tones more than ever before. I always think of oranges, reds, and pinks as colors that make me think of traveling, experiencing new cultures, being with friends, warmth—perhaps I’m drawn to those hues because I miss all of those things at the moment. As a creative director, I'm loving the trend of mixing earth tones with neon and dayglo pops—which is why I clearly had to take this crazy bright yellow color story and shoot it in a redwood grove!"

"Oof, it has been a doozy right? I feel lucky on so many occasions, but also so much of the day-to-day has been hard. At the onset of lockdown, the biggest challenge was presence. I felt like I couldn’t be completely present with my children, my partner, or my work at any given time. If the kids were having fun / not screaming, I would take that joy moment and quickly hop on my phone to reply to an email or Slack (that definitely could have waited). Lockdown definitely put a magnifying glass on the fact that we are all so obsessed with filling our days that we forget that the in-between moments and spaces are often the most meaningful ones. As someone who loves to plan and multi-task, I am definitely guilty of this. I feel like this time at home, especially the first few months without childcare, has been invaluable. It taught us that we have to slow down. We have to figure out how to accomplish more in less time, so that we have more time for each other."

"I have what feels like a major high point! Before the pandemic, I never exercised for the sake of exercise. I did lots of hiking with my family, and consider myself an active person, but not a fitness buff. A couple months into the pandemic, I was feeling claustrophobic and like I just needed some solo time in nature, no phone, no kiddos, not even the pup. Just me and the trail. I live walking distance from a few trailheads, so it started as going for a sunrise morning walk a couple times a week to just clear my head, more like meditation than exercise. After a couple weeks of this, I felt compelled to run for the first time ever in my life. Like full-on 'Run Forrest Run' vibes here. (Quick backstory: I had scoliosis surgery when I was 12 and have two steel rods on either side of my spine. I’ve been in and out of physical therapy and living with chronic pain for 20+ years, and running has always been a no-no due to the rods in my back, so I simply never tried). All this time stuck at home without outside stimuli found me seeking a new kind of physical and mental release, this thing that was just my own, this time to commune with nature—and so a 36-year-old runner was born. It sounds insane, but I honestly had no idea something so simple could make my body, mind, and soul feel so good. Now I try to go for what I call 'hike/runs' (they are definitely 50/50 at best) 4-5 times a week."

"The balance is hard! Anokhi is back in preschool with a small cohort of kids and Indira is in daycare with three other babies (whose siblings go to school with Anokhi! Gotta love the social engineering of this weird time). Before putting them back in school/daycare, my husband and I would split each day into four- or five-hour blocks so that we could each get into the kid zone and work zone separately. It worked reasonably well, but also made us feel completely fried at the end of each day. When we sent them back to school/daycare, I made sure not to quickly jump back into working from the second I drop them off to the second I pick them up. I realize that I need reset and recharge time to do both my jobs well, and I honestly never would have figured that out without lockdown. The girls’ days are shorter than pre-pandemic, so we have a co-op approach with three other families that we’re in a bubble with. We rotate pickups so that each set of parents can have a couple longer workdays each week, and that has worked pretty well."

"I’m also going to say something people might think is insane and impractical but I cannot stress the importance of still finding time to date your partner. It can be a micro-date, like literally when the kids are napping or watching a show. Or lean on people in your bubble to watch the kids for a few hours. Or if your kids are back in school/daycare, take a half day off of work and go for a hike together. This has been crucial for me and my husband David. For the first few months of COVID, I think we got used to this idea that any time away from work had to be time taking care of the kids, cooking, cleaning, and so on. But then we had this eureka moment that time for us and our bond would benefit everyone in the house, so we’ve done our best to try to find that time."

"Yes to all the hiking and outdoor adventuring! Here are some of our family’s favorite spots in Mill Valley: Stolte Grove: This is where we shot these photos! It's a redwood grove tucked away in Homestead Valley. Parking is tough, but it's a beautiful park with a sweet walk through a gorgeous garden, redwood grove, and over a little creek. Tennessee Valley Beach: Get there early and park, visit the horses, then walk along a spectacular trail to what is arguably the most epic beach in the Bay Area, and only accessible by trail. The trail is fairly stroller-friendly and you can also bike! If you want a more easygoing trail, on the way to Tennessee Valley is a sweet trail called the Fairy Trail. There are treasures hidden all along the trail for your kiddos to check out and marvel at. Cypress Trail: The Cypress trail is a hidden gem in Mill Valley. It connects to the Dipsea Stairs as well, but if you’re rolling with tots, I recommend just doing a there-and-back hike on Cypress. It’s relatively flat and has all sorts of interesting logs to climb and excellent spots for blowing bubbles while taking in the valley view. Cascade Falls: This is a great family-friendly hike to see a sweet waterfall. It’s a very mild uphill hike with lots of places to splash around in. Sometimes we do this one after school with Anokhi before picking up baby Indira."

"It was definitely an impulsive decision! Long story short, we took a weeklong family vacation to Guerneville, CA in August and realized how crucial a change of scene is for our family. We love our home and neighborhood, but just being somewhere else with different places to explore, a home’s different nooks and crannies, and finding different daily rhythms felt so good to us. We started to think about if now would be a good time to live somewhere completely random. One Friday night we were in zombie phone mode (we all do it!) and I said to David, we’re going to book something tonight. I don’t care if it’s 3 months or 3 weeks, let’s just give ourselves tonight as a deadline. We found an off-the-beaten-path mountain house in Ridgway, Colorado, about an hour outside of Telluride, and we booked it! Our hope while we’re there is to explore new terrain, hopefully give the girls a taste of real winter, and get our toddler Anokhi on skis for more than a minute or two. For me, I am seeking an internal reset. To pull myself out of the daily grind a bit (I’ll still be working, but it will definitely be different!) and find time to be somewhere completely different from the Bay. We’re there from Thanksgiving through the end of the year, and back in Northern Cali to usher in 2021."

"Where do I even begin? This year has been so necessary in so many ways. Like how have we been ignoring so much injustice, heartache, and ignorance for so long? As much as I consider myself politically aware and socially minded, I can’t believe that it took the insanity of 2020 to wake me (and so many of us) up. I feel concerned about everything, but most pressing for me in this moment is dismantling systemic racism and doing whatever we can to reverse and halt climate change. If I could ask people reading to take an action, any of these would do:
VOTE VOTE VOTE! I can’t say it enough. And if I’m preaching to the choir, then I ask you to help get out the vote. Vote Forward is a program that helps volunteers send handwritten letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters encouraging them to vote.
Color of Change is a non-profit organization that designs campaigns to end practices that contribute to systemic racism. Their goal is to champion solutions that move all of us forward. I also always recommend supporting the ACLU and Human Rights Campaign.
Learn about Intersectional Environmentalism. This movement's goal is to be an inclusive version of environmentalism that focuses on the connection between injustices happening to marginalized communities and injustices happening to planet earth. Also, based on where you live, look into what's happening with local land trusts and environmental groups and see if there are ways for you—and your kids—to get involved. They can learn so much from helping take care of the planet."
