Mother Essentials: Jen Garrido

Written by Erin Feher

The last time we went deep with one of our very favorite women, Jen Garrido, a.k.a. Jenny Pennywood, she was a mama of one and toying with the idea of producing women’s clothing using some of her signature prints. Wow, what a difference a few years makes! Today, the fine artist and S.F. resident not only continues to create stunning acrylic-and-watercolor masterpieces, quirky-cool printed tea towels, napkins, pillows, blankets, and even furniture, but has also recently launched some highly coveted women’s wear collabs with the Oregon pattern house Wiksten. Their latest, a trio of perfectly hued sweatshirts, dropped in late November. Another new addition? 2.5-year-old, Juna, little sis to Jemma Bee, 7. We asked Jen to share her must-have Mother Essentials for her and her two girls, and her 15 picks are below!

Want to meet Jen and shop her wares in person? Head over to our holiday-themed MOTHER Market, going down at Fort Mason Center this weekend—Sunday, December 15th, 2019, 10am-5pm

How To Be An Adult. “This book changed my perspective. It is like my little bible.” How to Be an Adult: A Handbook for Psychological and Spiritual Integration, by David Richo, $9.63, Amazon.

Peace of My Heart by Krishna Das. “I listen to this every day. It helps me find my heart space.” Peace Of My Heart by Krishna Das, $18.98, Amazon.

Neon Yellow Calzuro Clogs. “I am all about comfortable shoes. I am currently obsessing over these.” Yellow Calzuro Fluo Clogs, $103.99, Calzuro Fluo.

Murad Skin Care. “I love the sun. I always say that my true self lives on a beach somewhere and is just so, so, so tan. But since that really isn’t something I am able to do much anymore, I try to take care of my skin. I have natural freckles, but with the years of sun exposure, some of those freckles have turned, so I try to minimize exposure and I use my go-to lotion and potion brand. They have a whole line just for dark spots and uneven tones.” Murad AHA BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, $40, Amazon

Super-Charged Smoothies. “We make smoothies every morning and just love to add this.” Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder, $42.98, Amazon.

Oracle Decks. “I have a favorite for myself, and this is a version that I use with my kids.” Wisdom of the Oracle Divination Cards: Ask and Know, $16.60, Amazon.

Reiki. “I just became certified Level 1 through 3. I am not all that interested in practicing reiki on others but I am really interested in how I can do self reiki. Either way, I believe I can beam light.”

Case for Making Watercolors.“I especially love this indigo ink—it’s liquid watercolor ink in a glass dropper bottle.” CFM Indigo Ink, $18, Case For Making.

UPPAbaby Minu Stroller. “This is the BEST stroller. I can close it with one hand, and since Juna is a run-away type of toddler, having one hand free is always handy.” UPPAbaby Minu Stroller, $399.99, Amazon.

Supergoop Sunscreen. “This is my fav face sunscreen, and the whole family uses it. It goes on so smooth and is really easy to get on my 2-year-old’s face.” Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, $32, Violet Grey.

Inspiring Reads. “There are a few beloved books I keep around in my studio for inspiration.” You are a Circle: A Visual Meditation for the Creative Mind, by Guillaume Wolf, $17.50, Amazon; California Desert Wildflowers, by Philip A Munz, $3.56, Ebay; Amy Sillman: Works on Paper, by Wayne Koestenbaum, $44.51, Amazon.

Crocs Classic Clogs. “I started considering Crocs when I put my second kid Juna in them. They looked so cute on her little baby feet. I had always thought Crocs were a ‘NO WAY’ kinda shoe for me, but something shifted. I purchased my first pair about six months ago and haven’t taken them off since.” Crocs Classic Clogs, $30, Amazon.

Fair Season Vintage. “My go-to clothing sensibility is vintage sweatshirts—or any sweatshirt, really—vintage overalls, jeans, and Vans. Fair Season’s IG account speaks to me.” Fair Season Vintage.

Jenny Pennywood x Wiksten Sweatshirt. “Speaking of sweatshirts, my newest collaboration with Wiksten is live! We just launched at the end of November!” Jenny Pennywood x Wiksten Sweatshirt, $165, Wiksten.

Vintage Overalls.  “Even though I haven’t purchased these yet, I feel like everything from this shop is just totally me. All I want to wear are overalls, vintage sweatshirts, and vintage jeans.” 70s Dee Cee Overalls, $125, Fair Season Vintage.

Dr. Nicole LePera. “This psychologist offers up life-changing self help on social media. This is one of my favorite IG accounts—I feel like Dr Nicole is such a wonderful resource.” Dr. Nicole LePera.
