“The unprecedented-ness of what’s happening is really starting to hit me hard. As I watched my kids jumping around in the ocean today—a respite from being inside all day—I couldn’t help but think about the role this global pandemic will play in their lives and the lives of all of the world’s children. Will this be a blip or will it be their new normal? Tomorrow, hundreds of thousands of students will not be in school in America—nothing like this has ever happened in our lifetime. So many businesses are closing and countless numbers of people will be without income. And then there are those who have to work but have no one to take care of their children. Millions of Americans have no safety net in the event of an emergency—this is an emergency. Whatever happens in the weeks and months ahead, I can only hope that we will recognize our fragility and take extreme measures to ensure that if something like this ever happens again, that we will be able to respond sufficiently. Our kids may remember this as one of the scarier experiences of their lives, or a time when our country came together to take care of its people. I desperately hope it’s the latter.”
