If you follow the fashion world at all, you might know that the CFDA Awards went down on Monday night, and at the who’s-who-of-fashion ceremony, the master of sleek and chic, Tom Ford, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Before the event, WWD‘s Bridget Foley caught up with the normally press-shy designer and got him to talk (briefly) about something he rarely does—fatherhood.

“It has really changed me,” he tells Foley of raising his toddler son Jack, who was born in September 2012. “I’m not sure how to articulate it. A lot of things I cared about before I don’t care as much about anymore. It has damaged—no, damaged is the wrong word. It has minimized my ambition a little bit, my ambition in business, my ambition in having a beautiful house. It has become the most important thing in my life. Everything else has had to recede, including my appearance. I don’t care about it. I care about being successful. I just don’t care about any of it as much. You can’t. That’s all I’ll say on the record. Everything in my life—[parenthood] has softened me a bit. I’m probably very wound up, but people who know me say that it has altered me.”

On his goal to become one of the top five luxury brands in the world: “Absolutely, it’s still a goal. But I’m more aware of the universe now. If that’s going to happen, great. But now work is not the main thing in my life. [Being a parent] has made me less desperate about it.”

On preparing to be “old” in fashion: “Yes. I’ve decided to age. Since we’ve had Jack I haven’t had a Botox injection or a filler. I haven’t had time.

Of course, we can relate to some of Ford’s thoughts on parenting. And we’re curious to know…has becoming a mother “minimized” your ambition, as well?
