Despite its name, tomboy style is not just for tomboys. Women have been gravitating towards the classic, comfortable, and simple look for decades, and right now it’s especially having a moment. Gone are the years of women standing over the stove in a full-skirted dress and kitten heels, a.k.a. Mrs. Cleaver. The Sixties and onwards, women have been reaching into the closets of the opposite sex and looking damn fine in dude-style duds—just look at some of our Mother style icons like Jackie O, Jane Birkin, Linda McCartney, and Sofia Coppola. All of these women have embraced the tomboy look in one form or another and have helped inspire and transform women’s wardrobes along the way.

So, what makes up the closet of a good tomboy style advocate? Hint: It doesn’t mean that you can’t wear the dresses and skirts that you love. Every single one of the pieces on our tomboy style checklist are so versatile that they can easily be paired with your Sunday’s best, while giving it a bit of edge. Just take a look at our slideshow below to see the staples that every women, tomboy or not, should have in her closet.
