Looking for a fun dessert that you and the kids can make together in less than 30 minutes? We’ve got you covered! Our simple apple turnovers can be prepared with basic ingredients—most of which you probably already have in your kitchen! We used store-bought puff pastry that can be purchased at any grocer, and filled them with a delicious apple filling that’s perfect for fall. So, grab your ingredients, gather the kiddos, and get to baking. We’re sure these hand-held pies will be a hit!
-
Makes four
1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, defrosted
1-2 tablespoons of butter
2 medium apples (we used honey crisp)
¼ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
-
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Peel and dice apples. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the apples for 2-3 minutes.
- Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and lemon zest to the skillet.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the sauce has thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
- While the filling cools, unfold and slice the puff pastry over a floured surface into 4 equal squares.
- Whisk egg in small bowl. Brush egg wash along the edges of pastry squares.
- Fill pastry with apple filling.
- Fold diagonally, sealing each side.
- Use a fork to make ribbed edges for decorative design and a secure seal.
- Cut small vents on each turnover. Bake for 15-18 minutes at 400 degrees. Remove from oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before adding the glaze.
- Mix glaze ingredients together in a small bowl until smooth.
- Drizzle glaze over warm turnovers and serve immediately.
- Enjoy!
