Interior Designer Cándida Wohlgemuth Takes The Latest From DockATot for A Spin

Today’s profile feels like a much needed breath of fresh, spring air, as well as a preview of the summer season ahead! Based along the canals in Venice, California, new mama and interior designer Cándida Wohlgemuth invites us into her bright and light-filled bungalow (“organic minimalism” is her jam), while showing off her baby girl Vélo, 6 months, and modeling DockATot’s latest Sun & Sea collection.
Created with late ’90s summertime vibes in mind, the casual collection was inspired by faded denim and sunwashed tees, and features optimistic hues that are infused with the hope and renewal of the season. Ideal for warm weather and outdoor adventures, the collection includes DockATot covers in two shibori patterns (in a marine blue and faded red), as well as matching solids—all made with 100% woven cotton. Meanwhile, there are two complementary Cabana Kits that can be paired with the Docks to offer protection from the sun, sand, and other elements.

"WHLF studio is an interior design and creative studio I started with my husband Jeffrey. I've always been obsessed with interiors and this studio is the culmination of my time working in the creative industry as a creative director and photographer and bringing my passion for interiors to life through personal and client projects."

Inspired by earth elements and warm summer days, DockATot's new Deluxe+ Ginger Chambray cover is reminiscent of baked terracotta pottery and fits perfectly in Cándida's abode.
The ultimate docking station for babies’ ages 0-8 months old or 5-22 Ibs, the Deluxe+ DockATot offers a safe and comfy spot that lets baby rest, lounge, play, cuddle, do tummy time, and get diaper changes. They are lightweight and portable, allowing for easy movement from room-to-room, as well as during family travel.

"For interiors, I love the textures and depths of materials and objects, but overall I think less is more. I feel like organic minimalism is the best way to describe the vibe."

"Our home in Venice is a dream come true. I remember walking the Venice canals years ago when we were searching for places to live, praying that one day I could live there. We ended up purchasing our home almost four years ago just next to them! It's a 1940s bungalow, which just underwent some renovation this summer in the kitchen and bathrooms. Although we didn't buy it when I was pregnant, we went through renovation when I was. As construction tends to do, things got delayed and I was nine months pregnant with an unfinished, dusty kitchen and no fridge. I was so worried that we wouldn't finish before the babe arrived, and she arrived and we still weren't finished, but at that point it didn't matter. Our life had changed and delays didn't feel as big of a deal anymore."

"The home itself was square in every sense of the word. It had very little character aside from the original hardwood floors. I wanted to add texture and depth to the space without going overboard on budget and also make the current layout more functional, especially the kitchen. I wanted the home to feel calm, clean, and inviting and take advantage of all the gorgeous natural light that shines in the afternoons and evenings. We refinished the floors to their natural wooden color (they were stained orange before) and added plaster details, which make you feel like a breath of fresh air when you come into the home."

- "My family is here in LA, and that's so important for me to have her spend time with them. I grew up here and my love for this city runs deep. I love that she is around so many different cultures, creative humans, and things to do outdoors."
-
"We're an eight minute walk to the beach, which is a dream! I love taking her to catch the sunsets and have her experience the beach. I can't wait for her to begin exploring the ocean once she's old enough. Another favorite is the Venice Canals—walks with her there are just the best."

- "L.A. is such a haven for all of that! The Rose Bowl Flea market is hands down my absolute favorite (it just reopened after over a year!). Not only can you find anything and everything there, I am so inspired by everyone's looks walking around—flea market fashion is REAL."

"Now that Vélo is six months old, I wanted something larger that she could still hang out in. I loved the soft red tones and that it comes with a little cabana to give her shade when we're outside in the sun."

"I love that it's spacious enough for her to move around in, but not too large, and is super light, so it's really easy to take from room to room. And Vélo loves the Cabana! She can hang out outside without always squinting or having to only be kept in a shaded area."

"Thank you! I wanted to stay with black, white, and wood color schemes (I know, not much of a color scheme, but you know). It all started when I found this gorgeous rug with great geometric patterns that reminded me of the rugs you find in Morocco, then used that to design the rest of the space around it. I chose natural stone-washed linen crib sheets to keep the space feeling airy, a black dresser to add a dash of modern, my favorite chair and ottoman to add interest in shapes, then tied it together with an original painting of mine above the changing pad."
"Overall, the room has a calm sophistication to it. The calming vibe is much needed at 2 a.m. with a screaming baby. The chair and ottoman set are so comfy and I love getting to spend time snuggling with Vélo in her room."

- "I can't wait to see Vélo become her own person. We see little inklings of her personality coming out now and it's just the best. I can't wait to see who she becomes."
- "I've never done this before, so as a first time mom it's always nerve wracking thinking about raising a child of my own. I just want to raise her well."
-
Some of the hallmark features of the Cabana Kit include safeguarding your baby from the sun and other elements, protection from mosquitos and bugs, and keeping the bottom of your DockATot clean and dry when used outdoors.

"It truly was such a blessing. My husband and I had been trying for over a year to have a baby, and we found out the news in February 2020, right before the world changed. Thankfully, I had a really great pregnancy overall, but I was so tired my first and third trimesters. It was wonderful to have time at home to sleep in the afternoons and not feel guilty. I wish my husband could have come to the doctor's appointments, but that's minor compared to what so many others went through. I am so thankful that Vélo was born a beautiful, healthy baby girl and now we get to figure out how to do this whole parenting thing."

"Her name is a combination of my mother's middle name (Violeta) and Jeffrey's mom's maiden name (Loewen). Names are so prophetic and I really wanted her name to mean something special yet still be unique, so after we came up with it I was really nervous Googling what Vélo meant. It was meant to be, as we read that in Hungarian it means 'beautiful, thoughtful, and intelligent.' Not only am I obsessed with the name, but it's meaning could not be more perfect."

- "I was born in L.A.! My family moved to the 'burbs nearby when I was a kid and we spent every summer in Guatemala, where my parents are from. My mother wanted me and my siblings—two brothers and a sister—to be immersed with our roots by visiting family in 'Guate' and only speaking Spanish at home. I am so thankful she did that. I loved being able to live in two different worlds and being so close with family. I want to make sure that Vélo is also immersed in the cultures she is mixed in with. I only speak to her in Spanish and Jeffrey only speaks to her in German, so we're hoping to raise her trilingual."
- "My husband and I are both Christians and love Jesus. I am so excited to raise her with a strong foundation learning the Bible, living by faith, and in community with our church."
- "Jeffrey and I love traveling (we've been to over 20 countries together)! I cannot wait to show Vélo this wonderful world and experience it all with her in tow."
