You know those pregnant women who look like they swallowed a basketball, but are otherwise completely normal? San Francisco-based artist Chloe Fleury is one of those lucky women. But don’t hate her just yet. The French-born beauty is as sweet and talented as she is beautiful, with a paper illustration technique that is all her own and an utter devotion to her 2-year-old daughter Lula and baby sister on the way. Here, Fleury shows us around her colorful abode and talks work, motherhood, and gives us a peak of one of the most drool-worthy shared rooms we’ve every seen!
- "Boho chic and colorful. Embroidery, poms, and clogs!" Chloe wears an Antik Batik dress. Lula wears a Monoprix shirt and shorts.
- Rings and things.
- Like mother, like daughter.
- "I wear a lot more dresses than before and I plan to keep wearing them after giving birth. They are so much more comfortable, pretty, and feminine!"
- Tickle time.
- "The first trimester I lived in my Free People denim overalls, and now I am all about dresses I bought while in France this summer, sandals, and comfortable bras!
- "I enjoy it a lot! I don’t know why, but I feel more confident. I like to play even more with colors and accessories. The only maternity clothes I bought are two pairs of jeans from H&M, which I wore a lot the first trimester. My belly popped out so much earlier than when I was pregnant with Lula. I spent most of the summer in France and Greece, so I only wore dresses and came back to beautiful weather in San Francisco, which I hope will last until I deliver the baby, so I can wear these dresses for as long as possible. It is definitely easier to dress the bump when it’s sunny and warm."
- Where's the baby?
- Little ham.
- "I should say Yoga Tree, but this pregnancy I’ve been a little lazy and more tired. So, Smitten Ice Cream and Craftsman and Wolves, because I have a huge sweet tooth (even when not pregnant). I was really happy to find out just last week that I don’t have gestational diabetes. I also like Ocean Beach and Land's End for nice walks. There’s so much around San Francisco, too, for little hikes (Mill Valley, Tennessee Valley, etc.). I remember when I was pregnant with Lula, the last month I went on little adventures climbing all the pretty stairs I could find around the city to make her come, the Filbert Steps, for example! I am less energetic this time, but I’ll try! For cute kids' stores, my favorites are Tantrum, Mapamundi Kids, and Tug Tug. Natural Resources and Day One are good places for baby stuff and classes. And I am in a serious need of massages, so I want to try the Nob Hill Spa. Outside the city, Indian Springs is really great for a babymoon!"

- Mommy and me style.
- "At first, i wanted to have a boy because one of each sounded fun. But I am actually very excited to have another girl. I think Lula will be a really good big sister. She loves other babies, she is so gentle and sweet with them. I like to watch her play with her dolls. I got her a doll carrier and a doll bed, so she can practice! Also dressing girls is so much fun! I love colors and girly things. The first thing my husband said when we found out we were having another girl was, ‘Good! she already has all the clothes she needs, we don’t have to buy anything!’ But of course not! Ha! Sure she already has a closet full of things and already a bigger shoe collection than mine, but how could I resist doing a little more shopping for her?! and I want her to have her own things, too, not only handmedowns."
- Sticker time.
- "Happy and colorful! Filled with little things from our travels with Lula (Morocco, Mexico, Greece, France), paper animals from my shop, the original paper sculpture I made for Lula’s birth announcement, and photos! French and English books, toys (too many!). She really likes her little kitchen, you can be sure every time we think we lost something like a remote control or keys, we’ll find them in the oven! Her CD player on the wall is a favorite, too, she likes to put music on and dance. Watching her dance is my favorite activity! She is so good!” Chloe wears an Antica Sartoria dress bought in Greece and Chemin Blanc sandals. Lula wears an Old Navy jumper.
- Bump watch.
- "I love Lula’s Caravan bed from Kalon Studios, and she really likes it, too! And, of course, the rotin vintage crib. The photos and paper illustration I made for Lula’s birth announcement makes the room more special and personal, too. I have to work on the new one soon to add to the gallery!"
- Tiny chef.
- "The only new thing we bought for her is a vintage crib. I’ve been dreaming about one for so long. I spent a couple of months in France with Lula for the summer and spent a lot of time at the flea market with my mum. There was this little shop full of vintage rotin furniture. So, I got a crib and a matching doll bed for Lula. It was a little bit of a challenge to fly them back to the U.S., but thanks to Air France Cargo I did it! I also bought some neon fabric from Petit Pan and had fitted sheets made for them both so Lula can play with her baby doll while I play with mine."
- So much color!
- Chloe’s paper raccoon and paper bunny designs decorate the wall.
- "At first we wanted to move to a bigger apartment, but thanks to San Francisco’s rental situation it is impossible for us to move. So, the girls will share the same room, and it’s a good thing, I just wish their bedroom was a little bigger. We made a little corner for the baby, it is almost finished. We repainted the wall in blue for a change. I bought the little blanket and pillows in France, the shell mobile in Greece this summer, and made the flamingo, which is brand new to my shop. I am obsessed with baskets, I might have like 20 baskets in our home, but I find them so beautiful and practical. The poms one is from Eliza Gran and I got the striped one at a market in London. They are perfect for toys, little shoes, and blanket storage. I am still waiting on a little crochet round rug I ordered and a gold pineapple mirror I saw when I was in France."
- New shoes of her own...because Chloe couldn't resist.
- "A little more challenging. It was very easy with Lula, for this one I feel more tired, I have stronger lower back pain, which is normal I guess since I have a toddler to take care of."
- "I had some bleeding early in the pregnancy due to a hematoma, which at first I thought was a miscarriage. During the monthly check up at around 12 weeks the doctor couldn’t hear the heartbeat, and that was so scary! This pregnancy is definitely more stressful than the first one, also because I had a miscarriage between the two and heard/read too many bad stories. But everything is fine now. I just stay in my bubble and tell myself everything will be fine, stay positive, and I can’t wait to welcome her into our family."
- An Eliza Gran basket.
- “My husband Mehdi will probably have a week off and his mum is coming for 3 weeks to help us. My parents might come for a week, but they came for a month for Lula’s birth and this year will be a little more challenging for them as my sister is having a baby girl, as well! Our due dates are exactly one month apart."
- "I don’t really have any plans in place. Lula will be at preschool and I hope I can work from home with the baby when she naps for the first few months at least, then we’ll see how it goes. Like we did with Lula, we’ll probably have a nanny coming a few hours a week and then daycare." Chloe wears a Sandro dress and Swedish Hasbeens. Lula wears a Gap dress.
- Global touches.
- "Rediscovering all the little things in life with her. She makes us so happy, she makes us laugh every day. Every stage is so sweet and touching. We learn so much and love her like crazy! I am so excited to see how she’ll be with her sister. My husband and I laugh sometimes at night imagining how Lula will be when she is a teenager, how she’ll hate us and lie to us like we did with our parents (that scares me a lot, too!), I hope she won’t!”
- "Breastfeeding, I hope to be better at it this time. I mean, it worked and it was a magical experience, but I hope I can do it for more than two months this time. The C-section I had didn’t help. Also, the guilt from not being with her when I am working. And the fear that something will happen to her or us. I became so much more afraid of death and bad things happening since I became a parent."
- "Epidural and hospital, but I had an emergency C-section for Lula, so I have to plan a C-section date in case she doesn’t come before the due date.”
- Yet another basket...and poms.
- "Not really. I think it’s good to hear other people's stories and advice, but I also like to discover things by myself and make my own opinion of things. Every pregnancy is different."
- French books.
- "I am a graphic designer/illustrator/paper artist. I have been working independently for almost 5 years. I work on my own product collection that I sell in my online shop and other shops all over the world. I also illustrate and do stop-motion animation, props for magazines and brands such as Baby Gap, Milk Magazine, Land of Nod, McDonald’s, Anthology magazine, Target, Playstation, and NurseryWorks. I am really lucky to do what I love for a living."
- "I love that every project is different. I like collaborating with other brands. And working for myself is the best! I like to make my own schedule. I could never go back working for an agency (unless it’s mine haha)."
- Chloe wears a Soeurs dress and Moheda clogs. Lula wear a Monoprix dress and Freshly Picked moccasins.
- "I have to be more organized, I don’t have as much time or energy as I had before. I used to work from home, now I have a studio, so when I’m there I can really focus on my work and when I get home I can focus on my family. I am now inspired even more by the kid’s world and like to create products to decorate little ones' spaces. As for client projects, I used to say yes to almost everything, now that I have less time, I only say yes to the ones that are really worth it."
- Bisous.
- “Leaving the agency I was working for at the end of 2012 and starting my own business was the best risky decision I ever made. I soon made a name for myself thanks to features on blogs and social media. I now work with super fun and interesting clients from all over the world."
- "I just released a new paper animal in the shop—the flamingo! I plan on making another one before the baby arrives and I am also working on a baby blanket line to match the animal kits, among other things. Exciting!”
- "It is very important. I haven’t really done any art projects with Lula yet, because she’s doesn’t have the patience and focus for now. I think she is a little too young and she has so much energy she needs to run and climb things all the time. So, for now I like to go out and explore nature with her as much as we can during the weekend, travel, and collect little things like wood sticks at the beach, rocks, and shells (in Greece this summer) for future craft projects. I love reading books to her and watch her play and talk to herself and her dolls...it is inspiring! But I can’t wait to start doing little projects with her, I have a lot of ideas in mind and the fall season makes me want to get even more crafty and bake!"
