Way before eating gluten-free and vegan was a big “thing,” trailblazer Erin McKenna was making a name for herself in New York’s Little Italy neighborhood with her dietary-restrictions-friendly bakery BabyCakes NYC, which opened in 2005. Now called Erin McKenna’s Bakery, the empire has three locations under its belt (including Disney World), a trio of cookbooks, and legions of fans (including us…and Martha Stewart). Here, the lady behind it all talks about balancing a sky-rocketing career while raising two adorable kiddos (Halsey, 3 1/2, and Ford, 1). We promise: Her take on it all is as great as her pastries.
- "My dear friend Wendy Mullin (of Built by Wendy) used to live in this apartment and I remember telling her if she ever moved I wanted in! My dreams eventually came true. We moved in when my son was just 2 weeks old, but the building is so special it was worth it." Erin wears a Topshop shirt and skirt and See glasses. Halsey wears a Lilliput dress and Capezio leggings. Ford wears a Zara top (from the girls’ department) and H&M pants.

- "My sister who is very into interiors calls it ‘eclectic.' In english that means totally random stuff that we find and love and buy. I really love how bright and open the space is, so I like to keep it as minimal as possible and just let the natural light and architecture take the main stage."
- "My husband disagrees with me on this ('You have to accept we have TWO KIDS!!’), but I firmly believe that the living room should not have toys. Somehow the clutter makes me feel like the space is closing in on me. I like toys in the kids' room, and we can haul them into the living room, or wherever we're playing, but they just need to be put back!"
- Interesting art prints abound.
- "If you look at it and it makes you feel like you're in love, buy it."
- "I think the biggest change I had to adjust to was letting go of my social life or even going out to dinner with my husband at night. Whenever I do, I almost feel unbearably tired the next day and since weekends with two kids is anything but leisurely, I feel sort of guilty for not being totally present. It almost feels like I'm just clawing for bedtime all day."
- Stacks of books, everywhere.
- "Before I had a baby, I thought that a child would be this crazy mash-up of me and my husband. After my daughter was born and I met her on a soul-level, I thought, 'Oh, you're just...YOU. Visiting the world with some sort of mission!' I really believe that I am just their host, here to make sure they are safe and help them unfold without fear."
- "I was worried that I was going to be so harried that I'd be walking around the streets of Manhattan all frazzled with one shoe on and losing control of my life and business in every which way. Most parents with two tell you horror stories and I'll admit that certain times are hectic, like getting out the door for the day or getting the kids into bed when I'm on duty alone, but I would say it's not as bad as most people make it out to be! I definitely do not look at my phone even a fraction of how much I used to, but I find it to be a nice break."
- "My favorite art piece we have is a photo by David Armstrong that was given to us as a wedding present. It's Johnny Thunder on his wedding day...and he looks like a (short) version of my husband!”

- "Well, my not-so-welcomed advice is to sleep train your kids (I did with both my kids and really feel that a well-rested family is a game changer), but I know it's very controversial! So, most often I just tell them what my sister Joanne said to me when I had a 3-week-old colick-y baby: ‘This is not forever, it does get better. You will make it to the other side.’"
- "No. No no no no no.”
- "I quickly blanch vegetables and serve them with nuts, crackers, and sliced fruit. Who doesn't like a little snack-meal every once in a while?" Erin wears a Topshop shirt, Alexa Chung for A&G Jeans vest, and Topshop skirt. Halsey wears a H&M dress and Dagmar Daley vest. Ford wears an Oskosh top and H&M pants.
- "Living in the city, as I'm sure has been said over and over, is a challenge with space. We had to decide whether the dining room was going to be our baby Ford's bedroom or a dining room. We realized we could split it up and have it function as both, so his room is a bit of a mixed-use space. I like having a couch by his crib, because it creates a sort of baby-cave feeling in there. My daughter's room is a mix of things we have bought for her and collected over the years. She has started taking an active role in her room's decor now by ruining—I mean, decorating—her bed with stickers and such. I love it because it's her personality all over the place.”

- "When I was pregnant with Halsey I used to hear 'Tiny Dancer' by Elton John and felt like she was this funny little ballerina and I thought Valentine De la Rosa was who she was. My husband was afraid people would call her ‘Val,' so we agreed on Halsey Valentine. My husband's friend suggested the name because he dated a girl in high school named Halsey and we all agreed it was really sweet. After we officially named her in the hospital, we found out Halsey was a stop off the L train! We had such a hard time naming Ford because, since he already has 24 cousins, most names were already taken! My husband suggested his name and I liked it immediately. My father who had passed away while I was pregnant used to drive a Ford and he loved it, so I always think of him with that.”
- "I am excited to see how we all grow together. I think about what the holidays will be like with grown children and it's scary and exciting all at once."
- "I think about the stupid, idiotic, clueless, reckless, dangerous stuff I used to do as a teenager in a pretty strict household and I don't know how I'm going to make it through the tween/teen/young adult years.”
- Sk8r girl.
- "My mother, Mary, is an absolute icon. She had 12 kids and ran the family business (CSS Insurance in San Diego) at the same time. I asked her how she did it, when I just had one baby. She said she wasn't sure, she thought she was in a trance for 40 years. And you should see her...she's very chic and on top of it all. My sister Bridget's journey as a mother with her adopted twins also stuns me. The adoption began with a knock-down-drag-out battle with the infamous administration at Kings County hospital who refused to release her kids to her but she never gave up. She's a fierce mamma bear. Do not step to her!"

- Loving all the food art.
- And another one.
- "My favorite day is usually an unplanned one. We love going to Madison Square park, having lunch at Eataly and doing some shopping on the walk back to our home in Little Italy. I think keeping things loose is key.” Erin wears an Opening Ceremony coat, Built by Wendy dress, Falke socks, and No.6 clogs. Halsey wears a vintage faux fur jacket and Zulily shoes. Ford wears an Oshkosh sweater.
- "I love that you don't ever have to make plans. All you have to do is bundle up, go outside, and have a walk-about. There is so much happening everywhere and it's really easy to get around (despite what most people think)."
- "The thought of moving out of New York makes my heart hurt. But my family lives in California, so who knows."
- "I founded the bakery formerly known as BabyCakes NYC. I test recipes and expand the business, write cookbooks, and stuff like that."
- "Arrive and take a bunch of photos for Instagram, etc., return emails of all kinds that relate to the business, eat a lot of donuts, put out fires, brainstorm ideas for expansion, company meetings...find some lunch, pick up the kids from day care, feed them, bathe them, get them in bed. Meditate, watch whatever I'm watching on Netflix while eating a big bowl of (vegan) ice cream, and then straight to bed."
- "It feels pretty cool! When I started this genre of baking a decade ago, we were the butt of everyone's jokes it seemed. Now, we were actually used as a joke on Conan O’Brien, so I'd say that feels pretty amazing."
- "Yes, I think it took about three years before people jumped on the party train with us. Before that, it was mostly curious New Yorkers and those who needed us for dietary reasons."
- "I have learned to let go a little bit more in order to have enough time with my kids before they are grown. I've had to give up working at the bakery on Saturdays, so I can spend time with the children. I used to love working Saturdays so much I couldn't sleep the night before, but I like what I have going on now just as much."
- "Thankfully we have a fantastic daycare situation, so it frees me up to do all the business stuff during the week. I find it fulfilling on both ends."
- "I have incredible friends with/without children who help me keep my sense of humor while parenting."
- "Big break would be when a producer from the Martha Stewart Show invited me to bake on TV! Career highlights: Baking with Martha (twice!), getting mentored by Tom Colicchio for Inc. Magazine, and being the cover girl for my favoirte magazine, Cherry Bombe."
- "Tailored pieces with some playful pizzazz. And red lipstick."
- "I've made sure it hasn’t."
- "In the winter: Well-made knitted sweaters with skirts and tights or jeans and a good button-down shirt. In the summer: Sundresses every day."
- "I love Isabel Marant's color and texture, Carven's structured look, and Topshop's fun separates. Alexa Chung is doing incredible stuff at AG Jeans, too."
- "I mostly go to Bergdorfs and Topshop. I never try anything on, but it's worked out okay so far!"
- "Terribly brief. The only thing I'll mention is the La Mer moisturizer that my mom gave me. And Tom Ford Wild Ginger lipstick.”
- "I workout every morning before the kids wake up because the cells in my body crave it. I wish I could sleep in, but if I do, I feel tired and cranky all day. And I meditate every night for 20 minutes when the kids are in bed. I have been an avid meditator for about 12 years and give it credit for everything good that has happened in my life (including, oddly, the Matt Foley costume idea I got for my son's halloween costume!)."
- "I'm expanding in New York with two more stores!"
