When we think of living the dream, musician Jessie Baylin certainly comes to mind. The beautiful, rock ’n’ roll mama spends most of her days alongside her drummer husband Nathan Followill of The Kings Of Leon and their adorable 2 1/2-year-old daughter Violet Marlowe. When she’s not touring herself or with Followill, Baylin can be found in the couple’s incredible, newly renovated, treetop home in Nashville. Want to get a glimpse? Below we sat down with the down-to-earth singer/songwriter to snap some touching motherhood moments and chat about style, parenting, her new album, and life on the road.
-
"Thoughtful minimalism."
Jessie wears a vintage Alice Cooper tee from Chapel NYC and ripped black jeans from Frame Denim. Violet wears an embroidered dress from Mango Kids.
- The atrium—aka coolest room in the house.
- Jessie's daughter Violet.
- "We renovated and expanded this home for our growing family. When we first purchased the house, it was small and simple, but had beautiful bones. We took what was already there, gave it a face lift, and had some fun with design. I wanted it to be kid-friendly but still magnificent to look at."
- "Trust your gut and work with the tones that make you happy. That, or hire your best friend who happens to be a decorator!"
- A set of vintage Hermes coasters Jessie found at a flea market in Atlanta.
- "Our bedroom. The view, the rift cut oak paneled wall, and the magic."
- Tippy toes.
- The toy room!
- "It has opened my heart in ways I never imagined. With that comes a whole world of emotions that hit you all at once. I feel love so deep in my heart and I wrestle with some incredible fears as well."
- Violet's feather crowns from Little Doe and Wovenplay.
- "When she would cry, it would cut though me like a knife. If she hurts, I hurt."
- How cute is this little pillow from Coral and Tusk?!
- "I was very close to my Grandmother Dill and her sister, Aunt Findy, and their best friend was named Violet. She always had this sweet spirit about her—always the voice of reason. I thought we needed a Violet in our family."
- Violet's room.
- "I designed the room around a wallpaper called ‘Violet Moon.’ I wanted to keep the tones muted, like a baby blush. Three mid-century watercolors that her uncle Ben gave us as a gift at our baby shower sealed the vision. I wanted the room to transition well over the first few years of her life, so that it did not feel like too baby-like."
- "She loves the dreamcatcher I had made by Electric Love in Brooklyn. It has her turquoise birthstone is sewn into the ring. "
- "Watching her experience life and how excited she is about it."
- "Sharing breakfast, playing with her art supplies, taking a walk around Radnor Lake, having her help me make avocado toast for lunch, maybe a late afternoon trip to the zoo, if its not too hot outside. This girl likes to be busy and out in the world."
- "I love our lacquered goat skin armoire by Karl Springer. We picked it up in New York City at Lobel Modern after a boozy lunch. The Joseph Szabo 'Wild Horses' photo was a gift I gave my husband for Valentine’s Day many moons ago. The Apparatus Censor incense burner is a favorite. Natasha Law sketch of Violet is also very special to me. My mother bought us the black vessel in the atrium from Ron Robinson in LA—I love that piece."
- Cool photos at every turn.
- "The kitchen, of course, isn’t that always the answer? Haha. Also, our top deck outdoor sectional sofa. Once the sun is down, we are usually out there listening to Brazilian jazz, drinking wine, and having a picnic."
- "Ben and I placed the window where at 5'4 it is perfectly centered to my height. It is positioned right before you enter 'the man cave', so I suppose I just had to have my moment. Hah!"
- The killer guest bathroom.
- Drool-worthy rings.
-
"I would say my personal style (goal) is better described by a feeling. I want to feel like Marianne Faithful on a European holiday circa 1968."
Jessie wears a vintage cream top and Frame Denim jeans.
- "More days of the week are spent in Lululemon, sadly! I have to be ready to dart at any moment."
- "My ankle boots, ripped skinny jeans, great fitting tee shirts and button ups. A long necklace from either Little Doe or Meredith Kahn. My collection of new and vintage rings. I love mixing all my metals as well—mixing all the golds."
- Jessie's favorite shoes: Tabitha Simmons black boots, Isabel Marant red heels, and Golden Goose Francy sneakers.
- Bathroom art by Amanda Charchian.
-
"Her imagination. She is constantly creating worlds and scenarios in her mind—I love watching it work."
Jessie wears a Tori Praver swimsuit with 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent caftan and Stevie’s moon sister necklace. Violet wears a purple Indian tunic handed down from Jessie’s god son, Griffin.
- "This has become a new ritual for Violet and I over the past couple months—before bed, we lay on the floor of her room and we start to giggle and before long we are in hysterics. It is such a happy way to put her to sleep for the night. Laugh therapy. hahahahaha..."
- "That is from Nickey Kehoe in LA. We've struggled with this space in our house. We obviously spend a lot of time around the dining room table, but the past two tables we put in there looked like doll furniture in the open room—so we went big and it totally balanced out the room like we needed it to."
- So much light.
- We love all of the textures here.
- "My Mother, Dori, and I are passionate people. We are similar in that we love connecting with others and going deep in our relationships and conversations. My mother is more happy-go-lucky than me, though. I hope to be more like her. I am definitely more rigid and struggle with trying to make things perfect."
- "I think everyone has their own way of being a mother and figuring out how to raise healthy little people. I am in awe of most of the mothers I know!"
- The kitchen.
-
"That when things feel tough, just remember it is temporary. The first 8 weeks of Violet’s life, I just had to repeat that as a mantra to myself so that I could survive some challenges I was having. I still use that and it gets me out of the hole."
Jessie wears a striped denim top by Rachel Allegra and blue jeans by Frame Denim. Violet wears a crop top and yellow shorts by Rita Co Rita.
- "Nathan and I make sure we go on adults-only trips a couple times a year. It makes us feel like young lovers and makes us so excited to get home and be back with our girl. It is also nice because the Grandparents get to spend quality time with Violet (aka spoil her rotten)!"
- Counter top details.
- "I wish I was better at managing my emails and technological life. It is total and utter chaos."
- Chair envy.
- Potty training in progress.
- "I am a singer and songwriter."
- "I started singing in clubs in Los Angeles when I was 19 year old. I had a nice buzz going on the West Coast with lots of great opportunities and I signed with Verve Records in New York City. After our first album, most of the label staff was let go and there were a lot of shifts happening at Universal Music. I was able to get out of my deal, keep my new material, and go out on my own. That's when I really started to blossom as an artist. I started working with my producer, Richard Swift, and we’ve made two beautiful albums together—Little Spark and Dark Place. I put them out with a distribution company called Thirty Tigers in Nashville under my own label, Blonde Rat Records. I love the independent music life and am passionate about the freedom that comes with it."
- "Sharing my story."
- "My album, Dark Place, just recently came out so I am still promoting that. It has been a cathartic experience for me, getting this music out into the world and seeing how it has moved people—especially other mothers. I wanted to shine the light on some challenging moments over the past few years and be really honest about it—I feel like I owe it to myself and to my daughter. I hope she will find refuge in this album one day. I’m very excited about going to Marfa, Texas to play the Trans Pecos Festival at El Cosmico. That should be a wild time. I'm also involved in Music City Food & Wine Festival. This will be the third year and I think it's going to be spectacular. It is a unique event for our growing city and really should not be missed if you enjoy eating and drinking."
- "I just enjoy every moment of it. I try not to stress or take it too seriously. I might as well enjoy it, because otherwise, what's the point? It took me about a decade to figure that one out. Ha."
- "Leather pants, something sheer and blouse-y, and a cute bootie. A little make up, because my husband likes a natural look (and so do I—phew)."
- "Raquel Allegra. Golden Goose. Balenciaga. Giada Forte. Nili Lotan. All breezy, easy pieces with a moment of great texture."
- "When I lived in Los Angeles, I did a lot more shopping in person than I do now. Online, my go-to’s are La Garçonne, Reformation, Shopbop, and Heist in Venice Beach, CA. If I’m shopping in Nashville, I’ll find myself at H. Audrey, Imogene & Willie for flannel shirts and other basics, and I’m not afraid to dig into the racks at UAL for a great bargain."
- "I’ve become incredibly practical. I really enjoy going out to shop when I’m out on tour. It becomes a real treat."
- "I love Meow Meow Tweet Lavender Cream Deodorant. I detoxed off Lady Speed Stick last December and this is the only natural deodorant that worked for me. I live for it now. I survived Bonnaroo without smelling funky, so that proves that it truly does work! I love Hermes un Jardin Sur le Nil. In 2007, we were in Paris and I tried a sample of it at our hotel. Everyone kept commenting how nice it was on me, and I’ve been wearing it ever since."
- "For myself, a Céline purse and a new pair of ancient greek sandals. For Violet, Montessori school clothes that can be totally trashed but are still cute."
- We could all use this reminder from time to time.
- "I’m still working on that."
- "The first year of Violet’s life, she flew over 60 times. We traveled all over the country and through Europe, and it was really special making those memories. The toddler years have been a bit more challenging, as she no longer likes to be restrained."
- "If you can remain calm, that truly does help the overall travel experience. The kids pick up on stressful energy and I’ve had to be a beacon of happiness and light for Violet when challenging moments come up."
- "For Violet, her sound machine and the bunnies that she sleeps with are essential for the hotel room. Those are the most important things we can never go without. For myself, hand cream and a big scarf to wrap myself up in."
- "I love Nashville. I wasn’t sure I ever would, because when I left Los Angeles, I left behind a great group of friends and a good life, but I have to say that living in this southern oasis has really been a blessing. I am happy to live here and raise my family here. I will never say never about moving, but I see us always having a place in Nashville."
- "We are big fans of Cheekwood Botanical Gardens. Violet does indoor art classes there during the cold months and roams around the gardens the rest of the year. It is a great place to go in the morning and have a picnic lunch on the grounds. My daughter loves to eat so we go out to several restaurants around town, as well. The way to Violet’s heart is through her stomach."
