The 3 Words You Should Never Tell Your Son
Written by Katie Hintz-Zambrano
“Be a man.” It’s a phrase we’ve all heard, and maybe one that’s escaped our own lips. Now a new film looks at the damage created by those three little words and the ideas that propel them. To be released this year, the film The Mask You Live In explores American masculinity and its general obsession with violence and emotional disconnect, which can have disastrous consequences. Naturally, we’re anxious to see the full-length version.
The film comes from the same folks behind Miss Representation, a 2011 project by Jennifer Siebel Newsom about the media’s portrayal of women, and it’s the second film for Siebel Newsom’s overarching focus, The Representation Project (see the clip below). Of course, as parents, we feel equally invested in squashing harmful gender-based stereotypes for both little boys and little girls from the get-go. So, while we’re all waiting for the newest flick to come out, we suggest perusing the non-profit’s site for thought-provoking infographics and tools for families.
