Need some interior inspo heading into the weekend? Look no further than today’s profile of Brooklyn-based Tina Rich. The interior designer and mother of one (Zoe, 22 months) and one on the way recently invited us into her simple and beautiful home that is a perfect mix of high and low. Affordable favorites (hello, Ikea!) mix with vintage and designer finds for a set-up that’s both down-to-earth and aspirational. Click through our slideshow to take a tour of her cool space, while finding out more about Tina’s design philosophy, 6-year-old design business, and wishes (and anxieties) as she becomes a mom of two.
- Tina and her 22-month-old bundle of joy, Zoe.
- And Tina's first (fur) baby, Brodey.
- "We’re in Crown Heights, Brooklyn on a gorgeous tree lined street of brownstones. We moved out of Williamsburg when Zoe was born to get more space. We love having two floors and a backyard!"
- "We’re actually planning a move to Florida in the next couple of years to be closer to family, buy a home, and leave the NYC winters behind. We both find NYC so energizing and inspiring (the people, the style, the food) but we want a house by the beach. We love that our babies will be born here—we say it makes them cooler :)—because it’s such a special place."
- "My philosophy is to fill your space with pieces you LOVE. I love Moroccan rugs, handmade ceramics, simple Japanese elements, and natural materials."
-
Tina's dresser in the living room is Ikea.
The chair is a reupholstered vintage chair from Chairish.
- Pretty tabletop treasures in intriguing shapes abound.
- "I’m definitely a homebody, so my home has always been my sanctuary. Obviously, it was difficult not having the option to go out into the world, and we missed our friends and family, but I also felt like I had everything I needed (my guy, my girl, my dog) within these walls."
- "My personal style is neutral, natural, and relaxed. I’ve been living in this Marta Dress and these Descansa Slides this summer. I love quality over quantity and supporting small businesses."
- "When I wear makeup, I keep it really simple and natural with Ilia products (skin tint, powder, mascara, and a brow gel)."
-
"I desperately miss meditating and taking The Class, but I’m not able to find the time at the moment. I know I’ll get back to it when I can, so I try not to put too much pressure on myself. Instead, I try to squeeze in a little time for self-care throughout the day whenever I can. I take a few minutes in the morning to wash my face with Lesse and put on some Summer Fridays cream. I take Alexis Smart flower remedy drops four times a day. It only takes a few seconds but it’s a nice way to pause throughout the day and I use it as a reminder to say a mantra."
"Zoe and I used to take baths together when she was littler and now that I’m pregnant, we’ve started again. I’ll do a Lesse face mask while she’s playing. I love taking baths while listening to Lacy Phillips Deep Imagining mediations if I don’t bathe with her. I take a few minutes when I get in bed to put Lesse oil on my face and light some Palo Santo. And Jared has been giving me the most amazing massages at night which I hope continue after I’m pregnant!"
-
Tina's plaster dining room table was designed by her husband. The chairs are Design Within Reach.
The vase is from Etsy and the bowl from Katie von Lehman.
The light fixture is by &Tradition and the mirror is a custom design.
- "When I’m at my best (meaning I’m well rested and not stressed!), I really think I have some sort of wisdom I can teach this little human! I don’t take it lightly that I’m helping her navigate this world. She watches everything we do and it’s a big responsibility. But I also don’t try to hide when I’m struggling because I think she needs to know we’re all human and imperfect."
- "The lack of sleep that comes with a newborn. Having to split my time and attention between two kids. The postpartum anxiety I had with Zoe coming back this time around. Going back to work. Ahhh!"
- "I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I love taking care of people and creating a home."
- "We tried for almost a year and a half with Zoe, so I thought this time around might take some time. IT DID NOT. So I wasn’t quite prepared to be doing it all over again so soon! Jared and I both have siblings a couple years younger than us and we knew we wanted that for our kids."
- "Her name means 'life' in Greek (I’m Greek) and it’s just so fitting because she is full of so much life."
-
"I wanted Zoe’s nursery to be gender neutral (except for the pink chair, I guess!) and not childish. I wanted it to be simple and peaceful. I love the plaster walls, the sheer curtains, and fun chair."
"The baby will sleep in our room for a while (probably similar to Zoe, four months). We always expected to move into a place where they would each have their own room but decided to stay here until we make the move to Florida. So that means they will share a room, which sounds really impossible to be honest! Don’t they just wake eachother up?!"
-
Zoe's pink Roly Poly armchair is by Driade.
Her crib is the Caravan Crib by Kalon.
The stool is from 1st Dibs, rug from Etsy, and toy storage is from The Primary Essentials.
- Sweet mother-daughter love.
- "I was always encouraged to follow my dreams and passions and that is something that is really important to us. It’s so fun to expose her to tons of different things and see what she loves."
- "Jared is our calm and keeps us grounded. He really is our rock."
- "She’s 22 months and loves animals, singing, and dancing to Mama Mia and Harry Styles, and playing in water. She’s really patient and focused, which she definitely gets from Jared. She can work quietly on a task for a very long time. I’m envious of both of their patience and focus!"
- "I’m 37 weeks pregnant, so we’re just doing the best we can over here!"
- Some of Zoe's favorite things: Her Loog guitar and Little People, Big Dreams books on Coco Chanel, Gandi, and Ella Fitzgerald. Plus, Yum Yummy Yuck by Amanda Jane Jones.
- "We purchased the Big Little Feelings course and I love listening to Good Inside podcasts. The main things I try to keep in mind is that I myself have a hard time managing feelings and frustrations and this little girl is only two! I can’t expect her to be able to know how to handle them. In the challenging moments, Jared always reminds me that things are constantly changing and that I can’t expect things to last forever. If she’s not sleeping well for a couple of weeks, she will eventually end up sleeping well again. If she hates getting her diaper changed now, in a month she won’t care at all."
-
"My work slowed waaaay down at the beginning of the pandemic, while Jared’s work became more intense (he’s an ER doc). Eventually my work picked back up and Jared’s slowed down and we had our nanny back to help a couple days a week."
"Jared’s schedule at the hospital is different every week. I work during the week and Zoe will either be with him or our nanny. He might work on the weekend, so it’s just us girls. Sometimes he’s on nightshifts. We have to keep a very organized calendar!"
- "I launched my business 6 years ago. There was no question that I wanted to be an interior designer, but I didn’t realize I wanted to run my own business until I had worked for someone else. I like being the boss!"
- "I moved to NYC to start my career in design and began working for a prominent interior and furniture designer. After a couple years, I realized I wanted to have my own interior design business and went out on my own and there was no turning back!"
-
A beautiful changing table set-up with a dresser from Ikea featuring Semihandmade finishings, plus a Keekaroo Peanut changing pad.
The small lamp is by Noguchi and the bowl next to it by Katie von Lehman.
The art above the changing station is by Jessalyn Brooks.
- "Jared and I both really love architecture and design. We love walking around Brooklyn looking at the architecture, checking out little shops, people watching, and dreaming about our future home that we’ll design together. It really gets us inspired."
- "After the initial daze of the newborn phase with Zoe, I was SO energized and inspired. Our days were so slow that I had a lots of time to dream of design. I slowly went back to work and realized how much I really love what I do. Truthfully, that is always how I feel after a break from work, even if it’s just a day or a weekend. I’m always excited to get back to it."
- "The silver lining was getting to spend so much time with Zoe. Working from home is both a blessing and a challenge. There is no separation between work life and family life. Juggling both a business and motherhood in the same space feels impossible sometimes and I often feel like I’m failing at both. But it also allows me to have lunch with Zoe everyday and put her to bed every night. I’m not losing two hours with her every day commuting to an office. I do dream of having an office again one day…a space that is inspiring and allows me to dive into the creative process without interruption. But for now I’m happy to be home and get to hear her footsteps and giggling upstairs."
- Summertime blooms capturing Zoe's attention.
- "Add being pregnant and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do! I have to remind myself constantly that things don’t have to be perfect and that my best is good enough."
- "The goal will always be to find a balance, one where I can be present and enjoy both my work and my family."
