Our Spring 2018 Editors’ Picks

Written by James Kicinski-McCoy

Spring is finally here, which means we’re back with a fresh round of Editors’ picks to celebrate the end of Winterpalooza ’18. We’ve been jonesing to pack away the chunky sweaters and boots and bring on the breezy dresses and sandals, as we’re sure most of you have been, too. Read below to see what James and Katie have on their spring it-list!

James:

“The lovely ladies from Cap Beauty (we profiled co-founder Cindy DiPrima on Mother a few years ago) just released their highly anticipated book High Vibrational Beauty and I cannot wait to dive in. I am a sucker for all things beauty and wellness, and this collection of plant-based and gluten-free recipes is right up my alley.” High Vibrational Beauty: Recipes & Rituals For Radical Self Care, $28, Cap Beauty.

“I am a firm believer that candles can change the ambience and mood of any home or space. I’m a huge fan of the large Haas Brothers candles, but they come with a steep price tag and are hard to find. Lucky for me, I found some cute miniature versions of them that are much more affordable and just as cool.” Goober Candles, $24, Areaware.

“My little kids are turning into big kids right before my eyes, and are definitely ready to ditch the toddler beds and graduate to something more spacious and comfortable. We’ve decided to go with the Perch Twin Bunk Bed from Oeuf, since they’re still sharing a room and could use the extra floor space. Not to mention, these are the best-looking bunks I have seen. Birdie and Sailor are already fighting over who gets the top.” Perch Twin Bunk Bed, $1590, Oeuf NYC.

“I received these cute, colorful pom pom socks in the mail for Birdie last week and she is obsessed with them—read: wants to wear them every single day. They remind me of an elevated version of the ones I wore as a kid.” Philo Socks, $40, Velveteen Clothing.

“Now that it’s spring, I talked myself into needing/buying a new pair of sunglasses for the sunshine filled days ahead. These slim, rectangle shaped babies from Celine fit the bill.” Rectangular Sunglasses in Acetate, $390, Celine.

“My friend Buddy Jackson is an incredible artist here in Nashville. His sculptures, paintings, and photography are something truly unique and special, and I admire him very much. His work ranges from moody photographs of the female body to intricate clay work to colorful oils on canvas. I am lucky to have one of his pieces hanging in my office at the moment, and am looking forward to getting a permanent piece for my home. He’s launching his new site soon, so keep an eye on him. He’s one to watch, for sure.” Original art, prices vary, Buddy Jackson.

“I’ve been trying to go to reformer pilates several times per week for the past couple of months and it’s been a real game changer in the way I feel, both mentally and physically. It’s not always easy to fit in self care day in and day out, but, luckily, the studio is literally minutes from my house, so it’s convenient to pop in for a hour in the morning or evening after work and get my sweat on. Plus, the instructors are incredible and all have a background in physical therapy, so I know I’m in good hands.” Reformer Pilates, prices vary, Swell Studio Pilates.

“Along with my frequent visits to pilates, I, of course, need some fresh workout wear that is easy to move in. OV always has the best color combos and the fit is like no other. I got myself a couple of new sets for spring, which help keep me motivated on those days when I feel like skipping class.” Free Form Bra and Free Form Leggings, $55-80, Outdoor Voices.

“If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I like to post about my health and wellness journey in my Stories. Particularly what I am whipping up in the kitchen in terms of good, clean eats. My latest addiction? Oatmeal and overnight oats for breakfast, complete with fresh fruit and peanut butter. The Moon Juice Overnight Oats are my favorite and make it easy to throw a quick meal together on the fly.” Gluten-Free, Raw, & Activated Mulberry Overnight Oats, $20, Moon Juice.

“My beautiful and talented friend Jessie Baylin just released her latest album and this time around, her collection of songs is geared towards children. It doesn’t hurt that her classic and soothing voice is guaranteed to win over the adults, too. The album is great start to finish, but a few of the tunes on repeat at our house are: “Little Bird”, “Supermoon”, “I Am A Dreamer”, “Power In Words”, and “Same Old Tune”. I highly recommend taking a listen as a family and redefining what comes to mind when thinking of music for kids. The album releases on April 26th, but is available for pre-order now.” Strawberry Wind on vinyl, $17.98, Jessie Baylin.

“I am a huge fan of bling, especially when it comes in the form of gold jewelry that I can be worn every day. My pal Ariel Gordon gifted me this stunning Medallion Signet Necklace that I customized with my sign. It’s still being made, but I am counting down the days until it arrives and I can add it to my growing collection.” Medallion Signet Necklace, $1,395, Ariel Gordon.

“In an effort to become more organized and focused in life and at work, I started a bullet journal earlier this month. It’s essentially taking a blank notebook and filling its pages with exactly what one needs and looks for in a planner and a journal, to house notes, goals, appointments, and more, and keeps them all together in one safe place. A must for any serial list maker like myself.” Bullet Journal, $19.95, Amazon.

Katie:

J.Crew always has the cutest sneakers. I love these mommy-and-me New Balances for myself and my son. I love how they match, but they’re not obviously matchy-matchy.” Kids’ New Balance for Crewcuts 220 Velcro Sneakers, $55, J.Crew. New Balance For J.Crew 891 Leather High-Top Sneakers, $69.99, J.Crew.

“Speaking of matchy-matchy, as if I needed another black jumpsuit, Smash + Tess sent me their ‘Sunday Romper’ and I wore it from Sunday…to Friday (at the very least). It is beyond comfortable, and even looks good dressed up with heels for an event. Now the brand is coming out with a matching kids’ version later this month, just in time for Mother’s Day.” The Sunday Romper For Women, $119, and Kids, Smash + Tess.

“Now that spring is here, I’m excited to get some more day trips and local nights away on the calendar. The historic Indian Springs never gets old, with its laid-back atmosphere and Olympic-sized natural mineral bath pool. There’s a new ‘Spring Fling‘ package running through late June that I’d love to take advantage of.” Indian Springs Calistoga, spa treatments start at $95, rooms at $269, Indian Springs.

“I finally upgraded my iPhone to the 8, because I needed a better camera to document all of the events I am throwing. Now I’m looking for a new case for it. I love that this one has a strap and means I would never misplace it during the hustle-bustle of party planning!” Emma Light Pink Case for iPhone 8, $88, Bandolier.

“I was gifted this notebook set by the editors of Lonny and it’s the prettiest ‘desk candy’ I own! Almost too pretty to write on. I also love that it has Midwestern roots like myself—it’s from an Iowa-based letterpress studio.” Desk Art Notepad Set, $19, Moglea.

“This beautiful curved sofa is the perfect shape to nestle in a traditional San Francisco home with bay windows. I’m excited to get it for my new office space, which is just a 7-minute walk from my house.” Mahalia Sofa in Navy Blue, $1395, Lulu and Georgia.

“I can’t get enough of the work of Jen Garrido, whether it’s her printed textiles (under the Jenny Pennywood name), or her fine art. I’m currently coveting this new limited-edition print she just released.” Limited Edition Print Of Wildflower Study M4, $350, Jen Garrido.

“With Mother’s Day approaching, I don’t want anything fancy. But I would love a watercolor painting by my son. I feel like no matter what level of artist your kid is, they come out frame-worthy!” Water Color Box, $7.99, IKEA.

“Now that Diego just turned 5, we are transitioning him to a twin bed. I’ve been on the lookout for bedding that will make him excited to sleep in it and make the transition smooth. He’s a superhero freak, so I’m hoping these do the trick. Organic Justice League Pillow Case, $14, and Sheets Set, $63-$103, Pottery Barn Kids.

“Diego is super into Black Panther, which I personally loved, too (definitely the most feminist super hero movie yet!). His preschool teachers have encouraged us to increase his Lego-building activities in order to boost his fine motor skills in time for Kindergarten in the fall, so this little set is tempting me. I love that it includes Lupita Nyong’o’s character, Nakia.” LEGO Superheroes Royal Talon Fighter Attack Building Kit, $23.99, Amazon.
