When it comes to the world of chic mommyhood, Ariane Goldman is a pioneer. The designer launched her label Hatch Collection back in 2010, when she was on her first pregnancy and noticed a gaping hole in the market for maternity clothing that didn’t feel like “maternity clothing.” In response, she created a line that has turned the industry on its head, featuring wares that can be worn during and after pregnancy. Now, four years later, Goldman is pregnant with baby #2 and showing us around her NYC apartment, while giving us a first look at Hatch’s Fall 2014 wares. Bump-friendly fashion from a woman who knows it all too well? Don’t mind if we do!
- "The aesthetic that Max and I have always loved is this amalgam of mid-century modern, clean and organic, and rustic chic. There's a lot of wood and plush elements. I like cozy, but I also like clean and bright."
- "A haven. A dreamworld. Somewhere that she can escape into and that can grow with her. The art is from Etsy and features images of things to dream about and get lost in. It's mostly white with pops of pink, her favorite color and the only she'll wear!" Ariane wears a plaid dress from Hatch. Charlie wears an Atsuyo et Akiko tutu, a Bobo Choses bodysuit, and Old Navy sandals.
- "I love the clothes bar that Max built for her. It has neon pink strings, which is her favorite color and hangs like a swing. I also love the print of the hot air balloons above her bead. I want her to dream and feel like she can fly high!!"
- "Luckily, we're moving into an apartment with enough room for the baby to have his or her own room. Charlie needs her sleep just like her mommy."
- "The West Village, which, even though it's just around the corner, is a world apart in terms of serenity. We've lived in Soho for so long and with the new baby coming, I'm yearning for windows overlooking trees and walks along the water."
- "Well, in NYC, it's not always your choice when you have to marry location, space, timing, and price. In this case, I was 6 months pregnant with Charlie and we had to move out of our walkup apartment. I was searching for character, soul and light, all of which this apartment captured. It's so important to us to settle on a place that is going to be our refuge, inspiration, and the place where our children can be inspired."
- "Be yourself and embrace your quirks."
- "I think it's a little alien when you walk into those homes where nothing has changed and they have two, three, even just one child. Children bring such extraordinary creativity and playfulness into life (or at least that's my experience), so the fact that we have a bright mobile here or a messy yet adorable storybook pinned on our wall just adds to the richness of the tapestry. Also, my new favorite accent color has become pink!"
- "I tend to love the living room, as it's the center of the home. It's a loft, so all things revolve there."
- "I love our vintage post office armoire we got off eBay. It offers a place to showcase our love of design and architecture books. I also love Charlie's room. Max built her closet from hot pink string and a branch and it's feels from the heart."
- "Everything. But I suppose the notion that I am working every day to be better for my child and to teach her how to contribute positively to the world."
- Beauty and the bump.
- "Everything. But most? I suppose just not getting enough time with Charlie...though I can't imagine there would ever be 'enough.'"
- "We wake up early, have breakfast together, play at home, and open the windows to say hello to the day. Assuming it's not a work/school day, we'll head to a later breakfast with Max (who snoozes on the weekends) and to the playground to get out that crazy toddler energy. If we're out East, we like to be on the water in the afternoons, but if we're in the city, it's plans with friends or some sort of cultural moment—a concert, a museum, any one of the number of things that are such incredible family offerings in NYC. We're usually out for most of the day, so when we get home, it's a quick dinner and a happy bath before drifting off."
- "Her smile. Her mischief. Her insights. Her exuberance. Her wonder. Her eyes. Her love. Her curiosity. I can go on..."
- "I don't. We didn't find out with Charlie, either. I love the feeling of heading into an unknown adventure." Ariane wears a Hatch jumpsuit, Stella McCartney heels, and Arielle De Pinto necklace. Charlie wears a Zara dress and shoes from Paris.
- "Time in the day, probably."
- "Whoa, that's a big question. I think every mother is different, and am just grateful for the learnings that I have from my mom and all of the ways she made my life better and more special."
- "Life has to move forward this time around since I have Charlie. I didn't have a child or Hatch the first go round, so I had a lot more time on my hands to live and experience the pregnancy. This time, I'm too busy to notice, other than the wobbling down the street."
- "How quickly the 'pop' happened."
- "It's funny how as we get older we appreciate the thing about our mothers we always took for granted. My mother worked when I was a child and while I hated it then and wanted more time with her, I realize what an example she set for me and how she stepped up to the plate when she needed to. Carolina Herrera seems to have an amazing relationship with her daughters. She is successful, stunning, elegant, and poised and her daughters seem to respect her greatly. I hope my kids will look at me the same way." Ariane wears a Hatch dress and Golden Goose booties. Charlie wears a skirt from India.
- "Probably boho with hints of luxury. My favorite brands are Acne, Celine, Isabel Marant, and Margiela. I like simple forms, with a twist."
- "Thankfully, no. I feel like Hatch has really helped me transition all of the things I was attracted and drawn to pre-pregnancy through the bump phase and beyond."
- "A good dress, my jewelry staples— Carolina Bucci, Monique Pean, Ariel Gordon—and my Celine bag."
- "The first time I was pregnant—in 2010—and I tried to buy 'maternity' clothing. It's just awful, which is why that word is kind of taboo in our office. Before Hatch, I founded my first company, twobirds Bridesmaids, in 2007 when I was getting married and saw the need for better, more elegant and refined solutions that you can wear again after the wedding. Before that, I was actually working on Wall Street."
- "Constant challenges. We're growing like crazy right now, so there are a ton of growing pains and I would probably be okay with a few less dramatic days, but it's never, ever dull."
- "Being a mother has made me feel more inspired than ever before. How do I balance? Any way I can. My time with Charlie is invaluable. My time at work is...my time. I just do the best I can, because I feel as though they're both really important to being a good mother."
- "Cup of Jo and Oh Joy! have always been great blogs and have only grown with Joanna's and Joy's families, and I've always loved Habitually Chic and Garance Dore. I love the Hive blog, with its West Coast perspective, and there's a new UK site with a shop called Nine in the Mirror that is kind of like the NetAPorter of pregnancy, complete with the great editorial of The Edit. And of course I'm a big fan of Mother, even though you guys are new. You're just killing it!" Ariane wears a Hatch dress, Isabel Marant heels, a hair comb from Paris, and a Van Cleef butterfly necklace.
- "Clarins Huile Tonic, yoga, and Hatch…obviously!"
- "The Spa at Great Jones for massages. Ten Over Ten for nails. The corner pizza place. The Bleecker playground. And Big Gay Ice Cream in the West Village, for sure."
- "I wear a lot of transitional clothes, as I feel like timeless shapes can really be dressed up or down with accessories, makeup, etc. Night-out usually involves more cleavage. Ha."
- "New Isabel Marant winter boots for me. For Charlie, there's a tutu from Atsuyo et Akiko with sparkly pompoms I have to get her for fall."
- "Both, but online, mostly."
- "The energy. The diversity."
- "France. I'm a Francophile, for sure."
- "Let's just say we've got a lot cooking this fall...look out for some really beautiful lifestyle accompaniments to the collection to be sold on the site in October, and also a pretty amazing collaboration for Holiday. Like I said, never a dull moment."

Ariane’s baby bump is lovely and she wore some really nice shoes. I wish she had been barefoot, as it look like she has cute feet. She may have been barefoot-shy. No one wears high heels around the house in real life!
