When it comes to beauty advice, it’s often the case that mother knows best. Think about it…you (most likely) share DNA with that woman, and she knows what’s around the corner for you, from wrinkles to hair loss, and the more pleasant stuff, too. Plus, chances are she was your first beauty icon and everything from the way she applied lipstick to her signature scent are forever embedded in your memory. So, to celebrate these most lovely ladies in our lives, we asked nine modern moms around the country to share the best beauty advice they’ve received from their mothers. Word to the wise: Listen to your mama!
-
"My mother always told me to wash my makeup off every night before going to bed, and to keep my skin clean and hydrated. And to always smile and refrain from frowning to avoid wrinkles."
Anna Ayers, Co-Founder, Rahua Amazon Beauty, rahua.com.
-
"My mother told me to always try and look your best. Lipstick is a must!"
Linda Rodin, Founder, Rodin Olio Lusso, oliolusso.com.
-
"Drink lots of water! Growing up, my mom always carried water with her. It wasn't so much a beauty secret as it was just a way of life. It has stuck with me all these years and I'm so thankful!"
Dionne Ting, Designer, My Moon SF, mymoonsf.com.

"My mother never outright gave me any beauty advice, however, I did learn a lot from watching her. Wherever we lived she always had an immaculately decorated vanity set where she would arrange all her toiletries. Watching her put on lotion and perfume was a such a treat because she always took her sweet time. It was like an artist painting her body. To this day, I take great pride in my after-bath ritual.”
Yolanda Sangweni, Entertainment Editor, Essence Magazine, essence.com.
-
“My mother has taught me a lot, but when it comes to my beauty routine there’s one thing that will live with me forever! Perfume is not only essential for a woman, but it is very much synonymous with womanhood, as are handbags and high heels!”
Elisa Dahan, Designer, Mackage, mackage.com.
-
"The best piece of beauty advice my mom has given me is to always keep it natural. My mom was never flashy when I was growing up. She is a natural beauty with a very simple beauty regimen, which I’ve always admired."
Jessie Randall, Designer, Loeffer Randall, loefferrandall.com.

"My mom has always conveyed a confidence that I've been enamored by. She knows what works for her—like a black eyeliner and lipstick that never go out of style. She never leaves home without them and doesn't play with trends as far as makeup goes. Also, she's the original beauty DIY'er, swearing by a honey/sugar scrub that has always left her skin flawless. It's not until I hit 32 a few months ago that I decided to take her tip. My skin thanks me every time."
Kaity Velez, Co-Founder, Well Rounded NY, wellroundedny.com.
-
“My mom always said—Plenty of sleep, lots of water, and your only as beautiful on the outside as you are from within.”
Tori Praver, Model, Swimsuit Designer, Tori Praver Swimwear, toripraverswimwear.com.
-
"My mom's biggest piece of advice was to stay out of the sun. This was before sunscreen. We called it suntan lotion."
Wendy Mullin, Designer, Built By Wendy, builtbywendy.com.
