Equality starts on the bookshelves, so make sure yours are aptly stocked with titles featuring strong, smart, brave, and bold female characters. In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8), we asked some of our favorite mothers who have been featured on these very “pages” to share what stories they send their girls off to sleep with. Here, we list over 35 children’s books with strong female characters that center on admirable girls and women—either real or fictional. Naturally, our daughters aren’t the only ones who should be reading up on the subject—these tales should be on repeat for all kids.

You can also get a behind-the-scenes look at some our favorite children’s authors and illustrators within our “The Bookshelf” profiles of Yuyi Morales, Christian Robinson, Meenal Patel, Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Jon Klassen.
