There’s something so beautiful about catching up with someone right before the life-changing event of welcoming their first child. Which is precisely the opportunity we got when L.A.-based jewelry designer Sophie Monet agreed to give us a sneak peek of her Venice home (which is currently under renovation) and her nearby work studio, and talk pregnancy, style, self-care, searching for inspiration in quarantine, and so much more.
Before we came over for the grand tour, Earth Mama Organics welcomed Sophie to the mama-to-be club with a variety of goodies expertly tailored for pregnancy and postpartum, as well as favorites for the baby once he arrives in December. Some of the safe herbal-based products include the fall favorite Organic Throat Smoothie Tea, the Lady Face Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Stick (ideal for the Los Angeles sunshine), and Earth Mama’s cult-followed Organic Nipple Butter (just one of its many products offering breastfeeding support).

"We just moved into our new house in Venice after 4 months of renovating. It’s been a labor of love, but a dream project of mine to get to put my design eye to the test in a new category. We are not quite yet finished, but I’ve been enjoying sourcing vintage pieces and setting up our baby’s room! Our new house is a 1925 English bungalow. We wanted to preserve the integrity of its charm while adding some modernity in places like the bathrooms and exterior, where we could easily update some older characteristics, fixtures, and hardware."
Sophie wears a vintage dress, purchased at a New Mexico thrift shop, and Pine Hoop earrings from her own collection.
- "Overall, I like a space to feel clean and uncluttered—I don’t like a lot of decor items. Growing up in an artistic family, we always had bold art on the walls. I think the art should be the focal point of every room and the furniture should work around it."
- "On our honeymoon in Morocco last year, I went a little overboard and purchased a handful of rugs. I think I’m most excited to get to finally use them! We have a beautiful light blue Berber rug in his room, paired with a natural wood crib and modern mobile from Denmark."

"All of the Earth Mama products smell amazing. I'm currently in my third trimester, and I’ve been using the Belly Oil, which is super light and smells like orange blossom. I find it calming when I rub this on and so I reach for it whenever I can. Right now that’s both morning and night! I also love all the soothing natural teas and herbal lip balms that I use before bed. I can’t wait to dive into the rest when the baby arrives!"

"My beauty routine was and is pretty minimalist. I start my day by washing my face with just water and switch off between different moisturizers for my face and body. I tend to keep makeup minimal, if I’m wearing any at all. While being at home during Covid and running around trying to get the house done before baby, I've been extra minimal. I add coverage where I need it most and when I know I’m seeing people, I tend to slick on a coat of mascara (or two), SPF, and a neutral lip stain that will last all day. I also drink a lot of water and workout at least 3 times a week."

"Living in Los Angeles, I’ve always been pretty regimented about sunscreen and protection. And we often overlook our lips. Earth Mama's Lady Face Mineral Sunscreen Stick is kind of an all-in-one that I can throw in any bag. It’s quick, it’s dual purpose (keeps me looking awake while also protecting my lips), and gives me a bit of moisture when there’s none in the air here. I use mine—and anything SPF, really—daily."

"I try to go on as many walks as possible and just stay moving. I try and use as many natural products as possible, too. I haven’t painted my nails in 8 months, and I’ll now choose to have a cup of tea over a glass of wine."

"I love a cup of tea in the afternoon, especially now that L.A. is finally beginning to cool down. I haven’t always been a big tea drinker, but it’s a soothing afternoon ritual now. My current favorite is Earth Mama's Organic Third Trimester Tea."

"My pregnancy has been a smooth ride so far. I feel very lucky to not have had any complications aside from growing pains and exhaustion. It takes a huge toll on your body and has forced me to slow down when normally I’m very hands on and physical with my work and daily life. As for surprises, I had no idea I’d have insomnia. I thought that would came after the baby was born!"

"My style hasn’t changed that much. If anything, I’m wearing more dresses and I’ve become a fan of men’s dress shirts, but my overall aesthetic has remained the same (save for my Levi’s). I’ve tried to incorporate clothing pieces into my wardrobe that I’ll be able to wear after I have the baby. I like to invest in fewer pieces that are transitional and can be worn for years to come. I feel my jewelry is the same. It’s allowed me to add flourishes to whatever I’m wearing and allows me to incorporate a piece of me and the collection no matter what phase of pregnancy I’m in."

"Absolutely! Lauren Hutton. My mother and her timeless, casual style. My grandmother, who always liked to dress up and take her time getting ready, she loved her beauty routine and made time for it."

"I grew up in a very creative and close household with my older sister Audrey. My parents have always been very encouraging of us to follow our passions and raised us to be adventurous and take risks—that there is no right or wrong path. Along with this ethos, I definitely want to incorporate my husband’s sense of adventure and love of the wilderness into my son's life. He is a true outdoorsmen and loves surfing, camping, fishing, and living the outdoor life."

"I’ve always had a passion for jewelry and the creation of it. As a child, I’d play around in my father’s studio and woodshop, and dreamt of what I could do when I was older. As the years went by and I began to refine my passion, I’d scoop up scraps from the studio and craft them into pieces that I’d designed. That is how it all started. I gave myself the time and space to really focus on what I wanted and I was able to create this collection. It’s changed shape over time and now incorporates more stones and a broader base of styles, but the bones will always be there."

"Fall/Winter 2020 incorporates a touch more modernity to the range, I wanted to incorporate colorful accents that were inspired by jewelry as worn by Ali McGraw. I leaned heavily into the balance of heritage details and the modern woman. With subtle references to '70s disco culture with pops of turquoise and incandescent pearls. As always I try to focus on sustainability and use remnant scraps as much as possible."

"Usually my creative process is inspired by travel and being out in the world and experiencing things. That’s obviously been a big challenge in the midst of everything going on and so I’ve had to rely on newer things to inform me. The collection usually comes to life when I’m thinking about it least. When I come across a stone, or color, or piece of home décor in a book that informs me and the shapes and colors of the collection."

"I find it incredibly soothing to be in the studio and working with my hands. I can waste away hours manipulating or sanding wood and drawing new designs. I find comfort in that routine and experience and know the creative process is an incredible outlet for me."

- "I know I’m not alone in saying that every small business has had to make big pivots and adjust the pillars of their business during Covid. It’s been a challenge none of us were anticipating, but it’s also expanded the possibilities that are out there and challenged me to pivot and think outside the box more than ever before."
