Our Editors’ Fall Beauty Must-Haves

Written by James Kicinski-McCoy

Now that the temps are cooling down, it’s time to refresh your skincare and beauty routine. Here’s what Katie and James are loving thus far and plan to keep nearby all season long.

James’ picks:

“My teenage daughter stole my eyelash curler, which gives me the perfect excuse to finally try out the oh-so popular Shu Uemura one. I am probably more excited about this little tool than I should be, but can’t wait for it to arrive!” Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, $20, Amazon.

“I have never been so smitten with a concealer. This one isn’t cakey at all and literally glides and stretches across the skin for a no-makeup, natural look. I stocked up because it tends to sell out quickly, and I don’t know what I would do without it. Lately, I have been ditching foundation all together and just using this!” Stretch Concealer, $18, Glossier.

“Hands down, my favorite drugstore beauty product is this rosy pink lip gloss from Vasoline—and it rings up at under $4! I keep one in my purse, one in the bathroom, and one in my nightstand drawer. The color is subtle and it leaves my lips hydrated and smooth.” $3.99 for a pack of two, Amazon.

“I used to wear these little metal barrettes back when I was in middle school, almost every single day. I recently found the exact same ones at the grocery store and couldn’t help but buy them. I have a feeling I’ll be bringing back some subtle ’90s hair with these babies.” Goody Barrettes, $5.31, Amazon.

“I mentioned this hand-held size perfume oil before in our Summer Editors’ Picks, but I just can’t quit it. I’ll probably continue to wear it ’til it’s gone.” Amber Oil, $20, Hotel Saint Cecilia.

“I have very fine (dare I say, thin) hair and have trouble keeping any sort of volume. I was introduced to Big Shampoo recently and holy sh!t, it gives some serious lift and texture. A must for us girls who weren’t blessed with a thick mane.” Lush Big Shampoo, $44, Amazon.

“I purchased an off-white eye pencil about a month ago to help me look a little less tired. I apply it on the inside of my waterline and it really helps make my eyes pop and appear awake. A must for tired mom eyes!” Linen White Eye Pencil, $12, & Other Stories.

“My friends at Glossier sent me the new Super Serums. While I love all three, the Super Pure has become a fast favorite. It’s meant for stressed and blemish-prone skin, but I find it really helps reduce redness and my face feels great after applying in the mornings.” Super Pure, $28, Glossier.

“I was sent a case of this Skin + Hair beverage from Dirty Lemon. It claims to improve skin elasticity, hydration and skin density, increase internal collagen production, and offer nutrients for optimal hair growth. While it’s too early to tell if it’s working—I’ve only been using it for a few days—I really enjoy the refreshing taste and am excited to see results.” Skin + Hair, $65/case, Dirty Lemon.

“Another repeat offender over here—the SK-II Treatment Mask that I mentioned in our Fall Editors’ Picks a few weeks back. I will definitely be needing these sheet masks with a cult following during these drier, cold months ahead.” SK II treatment sheet masks, $135 for 10, Sephora.

James’ beauty bag choice is by Clare Vivier.

Katie’s picks:

“I usually use Benefit’s brow pencil, but I’ve heard wonders about Glossier’s Boy Brow product and I’m excited to give it a whirl.” Boy Brow, $16, Glossier.

“A new season calls for a new shade of nail polish. This putty color is slightly autumnal and goes with everything.” OPI Nail Color in Berlin There Done That, $7.11, Amazon.

“I haven’t played with colored eyeshadow in something like a decade. But I like the idea of a bold stripe of electric blue right across my lid for a night out with my fashion-y friends.” Benecos Natural Eyeliner in Bright Blue, $9.99, Amazon.

“I love the rum candle by Malin + Goetz, and this fragrance helps bring it to life outside the home. It’s sophisticated and slightly masculine, which I think is cool.” Dark Rum Eau De Toilette, $150, Need Supply Co.

“I’m notoriously under-accessorized, but I’m into the idea of wearing a shiny, modern barrette for a half-up hairdo or to secure a deep side part once in a while.” Sylvain Le Hen Barette, $60, Need Supply Co.

“Work-from-home moms like myself rarely get to wash their hair on the daily. My aesthetician recommended this dry shampoo that won’t cause breakouts around the hairline.” Batiste Bare Dry Shampoo, $7.99, Ulta.

“I’m forever on the lookout for a great bold lip color. My skin tone doesn’t really work with classic red, but an orange or vivid pink like this instantly dresses up my face.” Yves Saint Laurent Dessin Des Lèvres Lip Liner, $30, Sephora.

“My aforementioned aesthetician (a.k.a. my “skin wizard” Kimmy Williams) makes the best products for acne-prone skin. They have totally transformed my skin, aren’t expensive, and have pretty new packaging.” Gel Cleanser, $21, AES Beauty.

Katie’s beauty bag choice is from Baggu.
