Mother Essentials: Ginger Hahn

Written by Erin Feher

Ginger Hahn is a third generation baker—her mom and grandmother were experts at breads and biscuits—and Ginger has been whipping up her own pastries since kindergarten (although an early and ambitious attempt at strawberry shortcake at age six ended with her hair tangled in the hand mixer). But she stayed the course, and by high school she was training at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, followed by years apprenticing under the world’s best pastry chefs. She launched Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates at the tender age of 24, and today there are Ginger Elizabeth Chocolate boutiques in both Sacramento and San Francisco—gorgeous little sweet shops stocked with jewel-like confections, from chocolates to hand-churned ice cream to macarons. The summer ice cream menu just launched this month, and includes Parisian Ice Cream Sandwiches, Almond Rocher ice cream bars, and pints of Red Velvet, Coffee & Whiskey, Strawberry Rose and more. Ginger is also a mom of three very lucky little kiddos, ages 5, 8, and 10—her daughter Coco’s recent 5th birthday party featured a spread of cream scones, macarons, Meyer lemon rose lemonade, and a towering vanilla cake with Swiss buttercream and strawberry rhubarb jam.
