Kate Arends is the St. Paul-based lifestyle blogger and marketing consultant behind Wit & Delight. Not only does Arends have a serious knack for design, decor, and all things Internet, she also recently added Mama to her roster after giving birth to her baby son August. We couldn’t wait to catch up with the hard-working mompreneur for a quick tour of her beautifully curated, 1920s home. So, grab your morning cup and start clicking, below, for a hefty dose of Instagram-worthy inspiration and hear her thoughts on motherhood, career, and personal style.
- “This is the house that no one wanted us to buy. It’s a 1920s Tudor home that needed quite a bit of repair and upkeep to modernize. All parties around us told us it needed too much work, and that it wasn’t worth the time. But, we bought it anyway.”
- “Traditional meets modern.”
-
“The aesthetic didn’t change, but I became much more aware of the items that I brought into the home. The really ‘nice’ pieces are now at the studio. These days, I’m looking for durability in addition to aesthetic.”
Kate wears a sweater from Steven Alan, chinos from Zara, and Rancourt Loafers. August wears a bodysuit and pants from Tea Collection, and a Little Unicorn Bandana Bib.
- “Don’t take yourself too seriously. Go for timeless over trend.”
- “It’s inevitable. I grew up in a ‘house of chaos’—toys and stuff were always everywhere. I know my own days are numbered. In all seriousness, I do love when I find a random toy or blanket of his outside of his room. It’s a nice reminder of my new life, and helps me remember that there are three people sharing this space with me.”
- “The good: I turn work off when I come home. When August is awake, we’re hanging out. The bad: I’m always worrying about things that could go wrong or harm the baby.”
- “Watching him become a little person and sharing that experience with my husband Joe. It’s such an incredible thing that no one could have prepared me for.”
- “Everything. The biggest culprit right now is choking on solids.”
- “How everything changed after having him—my body, my mindset, my priorities, everything. I thought I would pick back up where I left off when I was pregnant after giving birth. However, I did not see these fundamental changes occurring immediately.”
- “Laid-back. Both Joe and I are very hands-on with August, but don’t sweat the small stuff.”
- “Enjoy the pre-baby time with your partner. Go see a movie, go out to eat, sleep in. Then, when the baby comes, do all of that again. Also, when the baby comes, take time to do nothing with them. Lay in bed, count fingers and toes, smile and sing to your baby.”
- “My mother and I are similar in not worrying too much about germs, or everything being clean. I have (knock on wood) a really hearty immune system thanks to her! We’re different in the sense that I work, a lot, and so I’m not around as much as she was.”
- “My friend Dahlia had two kids before I got pregnant with August, and I am always amazed by how positive, patient, and unfazed she was by juggling being a business owner and mother. She handles the hard time with grace, too.”
- “It was literally the only one Joe and I both liked!”
- “August loves getting out and about, so ideally we would spend time running errands or people-watching.”
- “Hands down, the kitchen. I love to cook and entertain. At the end of the day, I find it incredibly relaxing to be in the kitchen with August playing and having a glass of wine.”
- “Bread and cheese under the broiler with a sprinkle of Maldon salt and red pepper. If I have avocado I’ll put that on there, too.”
- “Have a sense of humor, and be flexible. Raising a child is a marathon, not a sprint.”
- “Simple home improvement. I don’t know how to use a drill, but I did put together all of August’s baby furniture, so I’m getting better.”
- “Take care of yourself, too. When I’m feeling good, I’m the best mother I can be. When I’m putting myself last, I get snippy and resentful. It is my hope that in taking good care of myself, I can teach August how to do the same.”
- “I’ve tried like hell to avoid reading any parenting books. I did end up getting a lot from Heathly Sleep Habits, Happy Baby and Bringing up Bebe. They spoke to me mostly because they believe in observing the baby instead of projecting. What August needs and what I think I should be doing can sometimes feel like the same thing, when they’re totally contradictory.”
- “How much time do you have? But seriously, this election has challenged me to live outside of my echo chamber. Treating human beings with respect was the foundation of which I was raised, and my family was split down political party lines. Joe was raised by an incredibly strong woman, and I plan to teach my son that no matter what gender he identifies with, families are stronger when both parents are involved in day-to-day life. Activism starts at home.”
- “Absolutely—if it’s in the cards.”
- “Modern classic.”
- “My wardrobe was pretty relaxed before having a baby, but in general I’m wearing more comfortable pieces—soft sweaters and trousers. Less structural.”
- “Boyfriend jeans, cashmere, and loafers.”
- “A Stokke high chair was on our want list of months! We finally purchased one. I really want Sonos for the house, too. August loves music, and we’d like to play more in his room and in the basement.”
- “I love that maximalism is coming back. I’m very interested in anything that Gucci is putting out right now. I’m a true minimalist in the sense that I want everything in life to be easy, but also enjoyable. I like a wild pair of shoes, or a bold scarf.”
- “I wash my hair a few times a week, and wear minimal makeup. But, I do have a somewhat elaborate skincare routine. I’ll dry brush in the morning and at night after cleansing, apply oil, toner, oil, and a moisturizer for my face and eyes. My favorite brands right now are: Tata Harper, True Organics, Aveda, Mūn, and Dr. Jart. I also use face masks by Goop, Aesop, and Glossier.”
- “Remembering to take a deep breath during the day, and baths at night. I do ‘meditate’ before bed, which usually consists of consciously letting whatever happened during the day go, reciting my mantra, and feeling my body melt into the mattress. I’m usually sleeping shortly after.”
- “This was such a fun project! I used the great wallpaper from Cole & Son. It actually set the tone for the entirety of the space. We got a great crib from Incy Interiors and glider from Room & Board.”
-
“His wallpaper! He likes to gaze at it when we change his diaper and always wants to stop to touch the walls before we walk out of his room.”
Kate wears a vintage t-shirt and chinos from Zara. August wears a bodysuit and pants from Tea Collection.
- “I run ‘Wit & Delight’ a lifestyle website, media channel, and content creation agency. I also develop strategy and creative for brands.”
- “I’m a graphic designer by trade, and worked at an agency for a few years prior to starting Wit & Delight. In 2009, I started W&D during downtime at work, and it’s just grown exponentially since I started working on it full-time in 2014.”
- “Every single day is different. One day, we might be photographing content for the site and another day can be spent going through paperwork. It keeps me on my toes. I really enjoy working with other women, and have felt so much more inspired since growing our team.”
- “I’m a workaholic, so it’s been a challenge to set boundaries between work and home. I’ve found that by setting boundaries and work hours (something that I didn’t really have prior to August) I’m much more productive at work. I’m also much more considerate of what projects we take on these days, knowing that my time is precious. It’s been hard to accept that my role as a mother will be different than the one I grew up with. And, I worry that I’m not around enough or that I’m too focused on work.”
- “With lots of help. There’s no way I could work 60 hours a week without a nanny, an incredible husband, and a very helpful extended family.”
- “We’ve got quite a few projects in the works, from licensed product to large-scale collaborations. That’s all I can say at the moment.”
-
“Yes! We’ve been in our home for almost three years now and we couldn’t be happier.”
Kate wears a sweater from & Other Stories and skinny jeans from Madewell.
- “We live in Saint Paul, but are right on the border of Minneapolis. We get the best of both worlds where we live: small town feel with the amenities of a large city.”
-
“Absolutely. My family is based in Chicago, but my sister lives five miles away. Joe has family close by as well. I’m also part of a baby boom amongst close friends. We all now have kids between three months to three years.”
August wears a Tea Collection sweater and pants.
- “All of our close friends are here, as well as family. It would take a lot to get us to move away from everything we have here.”
- “Last Saturday, we went out to lunch at Augstine’s Bar and Bakery, and then hopped over to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. August has been really into pictures, and really enjoyed the hustle and bustle, and big painting. We then stopped by a friends party and headed home to put August to sleep. Joe and I made dinner, watched some TV, and got a bit of work done.”
- "Minneapolis Institute of Arts. I love going here with August, and walking around the galleries. Minneapolis and St. Paul have a ton of parks and outdoor spaces. We are spoiled to have so many parks in close proximity with both August and Winnie. Minnesota Children’s Museum. They are remodeling and will be opening later this year. But before they closed, we visited at least once a week. All three of us love the hands-on exhibits. The Arboretum is a great place to walk around, and there’s always activities going on. MSP Airport. August LOVES the airport. They have a great observation deck that you can watch planes take off and land. The Minnehaha Dog Park. We love to strap August on and walk along the Mississippi with Winnie. It’s like doggie heaven, and August gets a kick out of watching them all play."
