It’s not always easy to figure out how to style your blooming, pregnant bod and still retain a sense of your pre-baby persona. But San Francisco-based stylist Laura Hollabaugh makes it look simple—which makes sense given her profession. To inspire those of you sporting bumps and needing outfit ideas, we asked the foggy city resident to show off her go-to ensembles for everything from running errands and lounging around the house to heading to work or a night out on the town. Ready. Set. Copy!
- "I am a freelance fashion stylist and art director for advertising, editorials, and lookbook campaigns. Some of my recent projects have been with Nike, Levi's, Marie Claire, Apple, Adidas, Banana Republic, Vice, Athleta, and American Giant. I went to art school for graphic design and photography. I started to build my portfolio after school by styling, photographing, and art directing shoots. I then became represented as a stylist by my agent Aubri Balk, based in New York. Alongside styling, I recently have been building my art direction book. I enjoy multitasking and feel styling, art direction, and photography all have elements of one another. I would like to focus on my photography and creating a clothing line next." For her Casual Look, Laura wears vintage jeans, a knit top, and a lightweight vintage jacket. "It's great for errands because it’s casual and layered,” she says.
- "I work really hard on a project and enjoy the process as much as the outcome. I like that there is a solid end to each job. Realizing that I can choose to focus on more then one thing has been rewarding, as well as the creative people that surround me."
- "I think it’s healthy to keep them separate, but important to have both in life."
- "I dress to feel beautiful and comfortable, not to be fashionable. I am often drawn to vintage finds and jewelry that has been passed down to me or I make from things I am given or collect. Now that I'm pregnant, I wear heels less and I wear slip-on shoes more. I love to go to Chinatown for $6 house slippers that I wear as shoes."
- "Since I shop regularly for work, I don’t often set out to go shopping unless I’m tagging along with my husband. I grab things as I see them while working or at vintage stores when I find something interesting."
- "Valentino, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Missoni Home, Fekkai shampoo, for skincare I like La Prairie, coconut oil, and almond oil."
- "She will be living in little kimono cotton bodysuits, along with some beautiful floral bibs. It was also important to have an organic mattress made for her bassinet and crib."
- "Community Acupuncture Works, Arizmendi Bakery for something sweet, and tacos from La Taqueria. Massages have also been a must-have."
- "Finding out we were pregnant!"
- "I eat much more fruit and avocados. My evenings have become quieter. And my husband has to help me put on certain pairs of shoes that are hard to buckle." For her Work Look, Laura wears vintage Levi's, a Missoni top, Zara blazer, and vintage shoes. "I instantly feel put together once I throw on a blazer," she says. "And I made my necklace, it’s an old silver coin from when my dad was a boy."
- "We enjoy traveling as much as we can. We just got back from Kauai and are going to Mankas and Indian Springs next month. The hot spring pool feels wonderful while pregnant. As for a baby shower, this month my friend is having a tea party for me at the Rotunda Room."
- "Meeting the little baby inside my belly that is a combination of my husband and I."
- "Losing some of the spontaneity in life."
- "I admire mothers who are able to keep work and motherhood balanced but separate. My own mother is a huge inspiration. She is so generous and always puts her family first."
- "My sister and I were fortunate to have a mom who was home with us almost everyday. My schedule is flexible, but I will not be home everyday like my mom was with us. She gave us the freedom to try a lot of things and didn’t say 'no' often. I think I will be similar to her in that way." For her Going Out Look, Laura wears a Christian Dior blazer, Zara top, vintage pants, and Ferragamo shoes. "I made the necklace with some shells I found in Greece and Kauai," she says. "This would be a look I would wear to a dinner."
- "I love how delicate and gentle girls are. It will be fun to do girly things with her as she gets older."
- "Prenatal yoga, along with hypno-birthing relaxation, in order to prepare for a natural birth. And we bought a washer and dryer!"
- "Our top floor flat is from the 1920s. We moved in five years ago."
- "With our large windows and high ceilings, the space feels much larger than 850-square-feet. It's simple with an assortment of modern and antique furniture. It’s very intimate."
- "I love having coffee in the mornings at our kitchen nook. You can watch the fog burn off from the window. I also love our dining room. Having friends over for long dinner parties is my idea of a perfect evening."
- "Empty space is important. It takes me a long time to decide if I want to bring something new into the home. I feel connected to everything we have. We collect pieces slowly as we come across them."
- "We converted a walk-in closet into our nursery. We're making the most of the space, while also having beautiful things for her to look at, like plants and fresh flowers."
- "Being able to walk everywhere is very romantic—to the market, to dinner, to our favorite Italian shop. I love the architecture of the city, having the ocean so close, finding new hidden parks from time to time, and the food in San Francisco is delicious!" For her Around The House look, Laura wears a Valentino robe and Oscar de la Renta slippers. "Soon after I come home I like to change into something comfortable," she says.
- "I am interested in living in other places, possibly New York, London, Los Angeles, and Sydney."
- "I like to take my time. Sleep in, coffee, yoga or a city hike, and cooking."
- "Walks in the hills of our neighborhood. Taking her to the farmer’s market and having beach picnics. Also, heading up north for wine and weekends away." To follow along on the rest of Laura's pregnancy journey, check out her Instagram handle @oysterlover.
