When scoping out an interior designer project, perhaps easier than doing an entire portfolio overview is to just visit the pro’s personal space in the flesh. Which is what we got to do when L.A. resident Lauren Soloff invited us over to the airy abode she shares with her 8-year-old son, Roman. The gal about town keeps things minimal and modern, with just the right amount of bohemian, handcrafted elements thrown in. Take a look-see yourself, and hear about Soloff’s philosophy on design—and parenting—while you’re at it.
- "Close to two years. It was a sort of a hand-me-down from friends who were moving. They used the word magical to describe it and I said yes."
- The lovely living room set-up.
- Lauren wears an Equipment shirt and Vena Cava jeans. Roman wears a Nico and Nico top and pants.
- "I love the oversized dream catcher above my son’s bed. We somehow managed to get that home from Tulum with us. I also love my harp chair—it’s fun watching different people trying to sit in it."
- Mama-son love.
- "Vintage, clean, Calfornian, bohemian."
- One little monkey...
- "Choose things that have meaning to you. I need to be in love with everything I bring home."
- Roman's bedroom, which opens out onto the lawn.
- "His room is a more playful, colorful, and fun version of my room. We try and go through it regularly to declutter. Too much stuff can be distracting. I like him to see what he has and know where his stuff is."
- Toys abound.
- The aforementioned dream catcher from Tulum.
- The instant-upgrade capabilities of a little neon tape.
- And what would an 8-year-old's room be without Legos?
- "I am continually surprised how much I can love someone and how that love keeps expanding and redefining itself."
- "I have little time for myself, which can be hard. So, I have learned to really value the time alone I do have and cherish it." Lauren wears a vintage dress from General Store. Roman wears a Nico and Nico top and pants.
- The kitchen scene.
- "The constant practice of giving yourself over and letting this person be themself. It’s such a challenge, but so rewarding at the same time."
- Bright pops of color. Never gets old.
- "That I am messing up my kid."
- We love a good kitchen rug.
- "Try not to be attached to the outcome. You set out with such an idea of how motherhood is going to be and it’s nothing like that at all."
- "We are similar in that we both love our children. But I think this is a more hands-on parenting generation. I was a child of the ‘70s."
- "I always have loved the name Roman and wanted something strong and powerful.”
- "Knowing I am Roman’s guide through the world."
- The sink sitch.
- "His laugh and smile, his sense of humor, his songwriting skills, his drawings."
- "I read a lot of parenting books and child development books. I try and always stand back from myself and see how I parent from the outside looking in. I feel there is always room for improvement or something I can learn about myself and while intuition is very important, as your kid gets older, its not necessarily enough."
- "White and serene. My bed is the main piece of furniture with a small side table. I had trouble sleeping for a while and found that not having anything in my bedroom made it much easier to rest—less energy swirling all around me.”
- "It is. It’s serene and peaceful—the best way to start and end my day. I also love my kitchen, the place where we spend a ton of time. Cooking, talking, homework, entertaining. It’s the center of it all."
- A multi-tasking chair/side table.
- "Casual, simple, and easy. At times there is a bit of vintage earthiness thrown in." Lauren wears another vintage dress from General Store.
- “It's definitely gotten more casual and I don’t really have the time to care too much."
- "Birkenstocks, button-down shirts, vintage skirts and dresses.”
- "Birkenstocks, button-down shirts, vintage skirts.”
- "Isabel Marant, Celine, Equipment, Jesse Kamm. They are all easy to wear and simple."
- "Always in person. I need to try stuff on. Online just never works out for me and sending packages back is just another thing to do."
- "I love being an interior designer and feel great about where my career is at. I have a wonderful group of clients and that makes all the difference."
- "Absolutely. I love what I do professionally, but I try and put that all away when I come home. It’s a challenge at times, but I feel the energy is off when I can’t focus on just being a parent."
- “It’s a challenge for sure, but I think I am managing."
- "My clients. They make my job worth it and the collaboration so much more fun and enriching."
