If you’re not afraid of playing with color, texture, and proportions, then today’s Mother Essentials list will likely strike a chord with you! It comes direct from Mignonne (“Maggie”) Gavigan Smith, designer of the eponymous jewelry label Mignonne Gavigan, which is known for its bold styles. Below, the New York-based designer with Southern roots (who previously worked for Marc Jacobs and Loeffler Randall before launching her line in 2014), spills the beans on her must-haves for herself and her 18-month-old son, Fields.

If you’ve got to carry that equipment around, you might as well give it a cute home, right? When I was first diagnosed, I was given an unattractive black pouch to carry all my supplies in with elastic bands everywhere. I found it incredibly depressing, so I opted into purchasing my own colorful option (which is actually a fanny pack). I can either throw it into a larger bag or wear it on its own.”
