Yes, “mom jeans” are now in. And while we might never get behind the really-hard-to-be-flattering old-school silhouette, there’s another idea of mom jeans that we totally dig—um, modern moms wearing jeans!
Since comfy denim is a staple in almost every mama’s closet (“mom jeans” or not), we asked some of our favorite moms and moms-to-be in San Francisco to show us their favorite pairs. Of course, these inky wonders are often doing double-duty, with the ability to go from a business meeting to a playground in no time flat.

- Name: Patrice D'Agostino Job: Graduate student and occasional food blogger Mom To: A baby due October 25th Jeans: "J.Crew's Toothpick Jean in Pitch Black wash." Why do you love these jeans? "I love that J.Crew has perfected a maternity jean that is comfortable without compromising fit and style. I consider my pregnancy style antithetical to typical maternity fashion, and the slimming and tapered aesthetic of these jeans allows me to maintain my personal style while also accommodating my growing bump. Unlike typical maternity jeans that have a full belly band, these have elastic side panels that will grow with your belly. I like to call them my 'mommy panels' whenever anyone points out that my jeans have elastic cut-outs. They've never been too big or too small for me, they have always fit just right."

What's your go-to mom uniform? "I have spent my entire pregnancy wearing midi dresses. After purchasing the Storq dress , I developed a bit of an obsession with knee-length dresses. It's so easy to take the look from day to night, dressing it up or down with various shoes and accessories. Also, throwing on a dress makes outfit planning practically effortless, allowing me to devote more time to the growing demands of pregnant life."
What about motherhood are you most excited about? "The idea of meeting my baby for the first time is overwhelmingly exciting. We have decided not to find out the sex, so we are eager for the big reveal. During pregnancy, I feel as if I have bonded with a little personality inside of me. I imagine that kicks and nudges symbolize certain personality traits. I am anxious to see how right and wrong I am about the persona of the little person in there."
What about motherhood are you most nervous about? "I am your classic type-A personality, so I am most afraid of not being thoroughly prepared for the baby. As far as I am concerned, you can never be too prepared for anything. I have read my fair share of pregnancy literature and I'm so nervous that something will be overlooked. I really want to be two steps ahead of my child's needs, though a part of me knows that will not always be the case."
Any big summer plans? "Enjoying my last months of pregnancy and spending as much alone time with my husband as possible. We know life is going to drastically change, so we are checking off some last minute to-do items on our pre-baby bucket list, like going to see Beyoncé and Jay-Z in concert!"
- Name: Kristen Philipkoski Job: Writer, editor, blogger at Stylenik. Mom To: Frida, 2 Jeans: "Red Rock overalls." Why do you love these jeans? "I've had these overalls for almost 20 years, and they were vintage when I bought them, so they’re very nostalgic. I used to wear them as a barista in Cole Valley, and I swear I still smell coffee on them. Nowadays, they’re the perfect comfortable jeans to wear during casual weekends or while toting Frida to and from daycare."
- What's your go-to mom uniform? "My new blue suede Birkenstocks , overalls or comfy jeans, and a Marine Layer tee." What's the best part about being a mom? "Giving and getting all that love." What's the most challenging part of being a mom? "Tantrums." Any big summer plans? "We’re going camping in Big Sur in August, and in October we’re hoping to head to Mexico City to see Frida Kahlo’s dress archive, and then spend a few days on the coast, as well."
- Name: Janette Yost Crawford Job: Interior Designer at Sun + Dotter Mom To: Vivian Sunshine, 2 Jeans: "Madewell High Riser Skinny Skinny in black." Why do you love these jeans? "They have a flattering stretch, I love the ankle-length, and the higher waist gives them a perfectly womanly shape. Black denim is all I do lately."
- Too sweet.
- What's your go-to mom uniform? "Black skinny jeans (multiple pairs!), loose tops, and oxfords. And a jean jacket, because San Francisco." What's the best part about being a mom? "The cuddles! Hands down. There's nothing as tender as the devotion of a toddler." What's the most challenging part of being a mom? "Needing to always be 'on.' Being intentional about 'me' time has become so important and makes me a better mom in the end." Any big summer plans? "We already took a summer trip to the farm I grew up on in Kansas, which was wonderful. I hope to hike Muir Woods and Fort Funston with Viv before summer is over."

- What's your go-to mom uniform? "Skinny jeans, bright ballet flats or leopard slip ons, and a dark t-shirt or sweatshirt, depending on the temperature." What's the best part about being a mom? "The smiles. The laughs. The love. Nothing could prepare me for the all encompassing love. I love watching him grow, seeing the world through his eyes, and seeing his personality unfold a little bit more each day." What's the most challenging part of being a mom? "I feel we were seriously blessed with such a relaxed and happy baby, so that's a great start. I think perspective and priorities are a big part of handling challenges, so I make a concerted effort to focus on the positive and count my blessings. There will never be enough hours in the day to do it all, so I do what I can today (done trumps perfect), leave anything undone till tomorrow, and ruthlessly strike off anything that isn't that important. I also make good use of a few apps that help me manage my life with more ease." Any big summer plans? "We're heading to New York next month. New York with children is bound to be a very different type of holiday, so I'm looking forward to seeing a new side to a city we love so much. - What's your go-to mom uniform? "Being pregnant, I find myself gravitating towards pieces that are comfortable yet stylish. As such, colorful and/or printed maxi dresses are definitely my go-to these days. Although, I'm curious to see how this will hold up once my mom status is official!" What do you think will be the best part about being a mom? "I'm banking on it being incredibly rewarding to see the little life you created evolve and grow. I can't wait to see my little peanut start learning and developing her own unique personality." What do you think will be the most challenging part of being a mom? "I foresee that my greatest challenge will be allowing her to make mistakes, get hurt, and learn things the hard way. She's not even born yet and there is so much I want to protect her from!" Any big summer plans? "My big plans for the rest of the summer involve finishing up my little girl's nursery and making sure we have all the necessary baby accoutrement in time for her big arrival at the close of the season. My husband and I are both excited and terrified beyond words to meet her!"
- Name: Katie Martinez Job: Interior Designer at Katie Martinez Design Mom To: Amelia Jane, 1 Jeans: "A high-waisted skinny by Mother (ha!)." Why do you love these jeans? "The #1 reason is they are so comfy! I also really love the high waistline. They can be dressed up or down, and the skinny leg allows you to wear almost any type of shoes and still look good (flats, sneakers, clogs, high heels, sandals, boots)."
- What's your go-to mom uniform? "Jeans, linen t-shirt, and either a blazer, light jacket, or gray zip-up sweatshirt, depending on the day's schedule." What's the best part about being a mom? And there are moments of pride that blow my mind, like the first time he smiled, or rolled over, or waved goodbye. Seeing how mesmerized he is by the smell of a jasmine flower or watching the leaves of a tree dance in the wind remind me how incredible nature is. What's the most challenging part of being a mom? "Patience and prioritizing. As a working mom, I always feel a bit torn about where I should be in any given moment.
