See ya later Star Wars—characters from the beloved franchise are nowhere to be found on the top ten list of most popular Halloween costumes of 2019. It’s something of a shocker, considering last year it came in at #4 on the kids’ costumes list. What has dethroned Star Wars? It’s the Avengers, which entered the top ten for the first time this year. Otherwise, the classics won’t be unseated—the general “Princess” category stays in the top spot, while “Superhero” comes in at a close second.

But, according to new research from the National Retail Federation, the biggest influence on the top costume list this year isn’t the movies…it’s social media. “Spending hasn’t changed much over the past few years, but we are seeing a noticeable increase in consumers whose Halloween purchases are inspired by their friends, neighbors, and even celebrities on social media,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. 35 percent of consumers surveyed say that they turn to the internet for Halloween inspiration, and the influence of social media in particular has increased across several platforms since 2015: Pinterest was cited by 18 percent of shoppers (up from 13 percent in 2015); while 14 percent cited both YouTube (up from 8 percent) and Instagram (up from 7 percent).
