We’re back with our second deep-dive into the topic of the teen bedroom, this time visiting the San Francisco casa of jewelry store owner and around-town fixture Sheri Evans and her musician daughter Sasha Berliner (check out her incredible, just-released EP here!). Perhaps the raddest mother-daughter pair in town, both ladies have style (and talent) that oozes out of their pores, plus a bond that is what every parent hopes for. Here, Sasha invites us into her room, recently revamped with new goods from RH TEEN, and the two discuss raising (and being!) a teen, décor, and more.

: "When I was younger, my room reflected my age at the time. Back then it was a little less sophisticated, maybe even with more humor and youthfulness to it (even though I still am only 17-years-old!). It had bright purple walls, printed sheets, stuffed animals, fashion images taped to the walls, etc. It was clear that it was a reflection of someone who was still trying to figure out who they were and what they were interested in."

: "I absolutely love the silver hardware from RH TEEN, both the bookshelf and the side table. They have a very cool, industrial feel in contrast to my brighter wall pictures and all my music equipment. I also love the gold accents that the triangle book stands and the makeup and accessory containers have. The geometric shapes and dull finish are modern looking without being too boring. I also love certain books displayed in my room. The Art of Being You by Gianni Versace is a beautiful and chic fashion/art hybrid book that gives me fashion and room styling inspiration. In terms of novels, Just Kids by Patti Smith has had a huge impact on how I view the world as a female percussionist, song writer, and poetry lover with a strong emphasis on political activism. There are other novels and fashion/art books that have also been amazing reads, among them The Sartorialist, The Great Gatsby, The Road, and more."

"Right now, economics and politics. Very adult, I know. But I am approaching 18 in June and I anticipate voting in the general election (and future elections, besides presidential ones). I want to be informed before I vote and know exactly what I'm voting for and what policies I am supporting by making certain choices in my life. I am also interested in social activism, particularly feminism. I feel that it is an issue that is inseparable from being a young woman who wants to hold her own as a percussionist and composer in the music industry, which is dominated by men. Especially considering the fact that I don't want to be a pop star, an industry largely based on product manipulation, sexualization, physical appearance, and marketing an image. I want to be about genuine self expression, real music, and independence. That inevitably requires feminist activism. I am always interested in music, of course. I am currently loving the groups Hiatus Kaiyote, Flying Lotus, and Angel Olsen. I've also recently grown interested in makeup as another form of self expression and art. I love beauty vlogger Kathleen Lights in particular."

"Yes! I want to be a performing, composing, self-producing, and studio musician. I also hope that I can do some sort of activism, fashion, or journalist/blogger-related thing on the side. I would love to merge those two worlds."

"I feel like 'Carpe Diem' or 'Seize the Day' is the best reflection of how one should live their life to the fullest. I like that the term doesn't allude to any stereotypes or overly girly concepts that I feel sell young women and their aspirations short. It isn't a gendered statement. "I'm still figuring it out, but I would love to experience a new location. My top choices are in New York and Boston. They have amazing music and art scenes, and I've heard great things about the schools there, too. I think it would be a great place to take my music (and my life) next and expand my connections with people."

"My new EP is my debut album that showcases four of my original songs. I had some of my musician friends play as my band, although I composed all of the parts (I am a multi-instrumentalist, so I was able to do this myself). It started as a music scholarship I won at the end of my junior year of high school, and became a full-blown project that emerged with the help of Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The genre is very unique, being a fusion of jazz, R&B, rock, and other sounds that inspired me to create my own. I am proud of the fact that it came entirely from people under the age of 18 (with the exception of sound engineer Reto Peter). It reflects who I am, not only as a musician, but as a person in general. You can stream the album on Soundcloud or Spotify or buy it on iTunes or CD Baby."

"You don't have to pay taxes...just kidding! Probably having the time to still sit down and figure out who I am and what I want out of life, as well as the frequency of making mistakes and learning from them and taking risks. I believe that happens all throughout your life, but it is so crucial to figure these things out when you're still a teenager. It can temporarily depress you or stress you out, but it's at those moments when you learn the most about who you are and what you are capable of. I feel like you get less of a chance to take risks or make mistakes when you're older. You're expected to have things figured out, and while you do get that kind of pressure as a teenager, it's to a much smaller degree."

"My mom is super smart and stylish. I can talk to her about everything from fashion styling and the latest book I'm reading, to politics and news stories, to makeup products and funny Instagram accounts, to up-and-coming musicians and business, marketing, and social activism. "Her room is very much a collaborative effort between the two of us. She likes everything out and on display and I want it all organized and put away. We tried to please both of us with lots of baskets, hooks, and places to stash all of her things. I also wanted her room to be a reflection of her taste and not mine. Her room is very much her hideaway from the pressures of being a teen and we both wanted it to feel authentic to who she is."

"My room was flea market furniture, hand-painted white and gold by my mom. My favorite pieces were the dressing table with the requisite photo-plastered three-way mirror and a big white boombox to play mix tapes I made off of the radio. The flea market aesthetic has stayed with me and Sasha and I love to scour garage sales and antique fairs. Her room is a keen mix of thrift shop finds and new pieces."

"I had a sleepy, suburban upbringing in Wisconsin, where at thirteen I told my parents that as soon as I was old enough I was moving to California! Sasha has had the incredible urban experience of growing up in San Francisco and going to high school in Oakland."

"Watching them grow up and become accomplished, self-sufficient beings making mistakes and gaining successes all on their own. Being able to trade movie, music, fashion, and book recommendations. Having adult conversations about real world issues even when their opinions don’t agree with yours, but you have to give it up to them because their reasoning is rock solid. And, of course, being ever thankful that they still love you!"

"Sasha is a senior in high school and is very together, so I worry much less now. At the beginning of high school, I worried about everything—artistic and academic pressure, social pressure, sex, drugs—it all seemed so daunting! I learned that the parents that pay attention and support what their kid(s) are passionate about have the best relationship with their teens. A sense of humor, boundaries, and letting them make their own mistakes at times helps, too. I also learned to listen more, which was very hard for me—I always want to give advice or interject—but sometimes they just want you to listen."

"My biggest fear is her not needing me anymore. When they are small, they need you so much and you get used to that and love it. Then they become teenagers and they don’t want you to do everything for them and you have to let go."

"I have such mixed feelings about this. I’m so proud and excited for her to go to college, I know she’s going to embrace the college experience and love it. If she didn’t want to go I would be worried. But at the same time I can’t imagine the house without her. I may have to get a puppy!"
