Pared-down and easygoing is the mantra of yoga superstar Tara Stiles. Which is an ethos that comes in particularly handy right now, with the NYC-based talent on the brink of giving birth to her first child, a baby girl. The founder of Strala yoga (which is all about movements that feel good to you) and six-time author (her latest book comes out in May) recently invited us over to her simple and cheerful abode, as well as her nearby studio, to talk pregnancy, style, career, wellness, and, of course, to show off some impressive moves.
- "We've been here for about 5 years on Prince Street in Soho. My place before this was just up the block. It's super tiny and I've had it for ages, but it's mega quiet and cozy so we have been keeping it for when friends and family visit. Sometimes we escape there for a night, order a pizza and camp out. Mike's place when we met was in the Flatiron. He had a pretty nice sized-living room and I convinced him to let me start my first studio there. But now we're all downtown with Strala a few blocks up on Broadway."
- "It's a pretty equal blend of both of our personalities. Pretty minimal and calm (Mike) and vibrant colors and lots of cozy, squishy, and a few goofy things (me). We both like to sit on the floor and have open space and not a lot of clutter."
- "How the environment makes me feel is everything. I want to feel calm, expansive, and creative. Things I surround myself with need to feed that vibe. Otherwise I feel there is just a bunch of stuff around to fill the space or an external idea of what the space should be." Tara wears a dress by Monki.
- "We're always looking for art. We have a giant white brick wall in the living room that we almost covered up with a huge photo of an iceberg, but it wasn't quite right. The open space still feels great there. Our furniture feels like art and adds to the vibe of the space. We live on our B&B Italia couch. Mike had this American Psycho white leather Florence Knoll couch when I met him. I recovered it in cozy grey wool and it goes along with a pair of Danish modern chairs, I call them the Christmas chairs since they are red and green, and a few Heywood Wakefield tables and dressers. The hot pink rug from ABC Carpet and a purple lava lamp bring the stimulation for me. I have a few prints by a really rad Dutch artist living in Paris, Ceizer. His work is super positive, lots of bright colors, mandals, and some word art. A friend introduced me to his work on a baseball hat with the word LOVE backwards so you only read it in the mirror. His stuff for me feels so fresh and sort of like preppy street art. Oh, and plenty of big chunky bright yarn hanging around for all of my random projects. I like to knit hats and give them away. I get my stash from Wool and the Gang, two awesome girls from London who have completely made knitting super fun and cool."
- "Well, it will be her space now, I'm sure! We'll see how it goes. I won't pretend to have a massive plan or to have figured it all out. We're total beginners. Neither of us are a big fan of random space fillers for her either. I don't see us with loads of loud plastic toys everywhere. She already has a few cool things from friends around the world. Lots of stuffed animals from different cultures and I'd be psyched to continue to get things for her that teach her about the beauty in the world and all of the diversity."
- "Her room will be there for her when she wants it, but we plan to have her with us for a while in a bassinet. We're lucky to have the choice in where she could go, but I just feel so strange about being in a different room than her. We'll see how it goes when she gets here! I am waiting for a stimulating piece of art for her specifically. It was so interesting watching Leonardo DiCaprio's Before the Flood and hearing his story about The Garden of Earthly Delights hanging above his bed and how that completely shaped his dreaming and thinking. We'll probably go with something less terrifying, but I'd love to find something to help her become who she is meant to be rather than bunny wallpaper or something like that. As for things, she's gotten so many sweet gifts from our friends around the world. She's all set on onesies, fuzzy animals, and books from our friends from Europe, Dubai, and Asia. My grandmothers both make amazing quilts and they made a bunch for this little one. Those will be the most special items by far."
- "Diversity of people, culture, and the arts. If we didn't travel so much I don't think I would be able to manage full-time here. I need to be in nature, so it's exciting to come back here after several weeks somewhere else. I grew up loving the freedom of nature, but craving the stimulation of diversity and all the action of NYC. I'd love her to get to know both worlds as she gets to know herself."
- "Sure. We talk about it all the time. Always visiting some place then crossing it off the list. There are so many places I love to be regularly and have great friends and visit, but don't feel like home. We'll eventually split our time between NYC and somewhere in nature. It will be nice to have another landing pad for breaks in a different time zone. We love lots of places in Europe and out west in America, so it's just a matter of exploring and finding the right feel."
- "Bubby's in Tribeca is our go-to. Cafe Habana and Ground Support in Soho. The west side along the water for a stroll. The Natural History Museum for play. Strala for relaxation. And Gran Electrica in Dumbo for dinner with friends."
- "We started Strala in 2008 as an easygoing yoga studio in Mike's apartment. It was a hobby, really, and my secret mission to evolve yoga away from dogma, spiritual materialism, and gurus to an individualized practice that was easygoing and enjoyable. I was also making YouTube videos at the time and started writing books and designing fun yoga apparel for Reebok and things like that started to take up my time and evolved into a business, as well."
- "Strala grew into an easygoing style of yoga, blending the healing principles of tai chi and shiatsu with the vocabulary of yoga. The movement feels very natural and creates a nice structure for progress. People say it's fun and they enjoy the freedom to move in a way that is comfortable for them and they also appreciate that it's not rigid or tense. We realized after several years of leading classes, there was a formulated style we were doing and improving naturally, and people were enjoying loads of benefits like dropping stress and tension, getting more creative and intuitive, and strong and radiant in the process. Once we realized our makeshift lab created something worthwhile, we started working with teachers and leaders (we call them guides) around the world. Now, we spend a lot of time leading the programs and intensives around the world. We have a few thousand guides who lead classes all over. There are several partner Strala studios and the community is super vibrant and incredibly positive. I also write books on a variety of topics in the field of well being, and get involved with a few projects or programs each year that are fun and hopefully useful. We work with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and BOKS bringing Strala, self care, and self awareness to kids, parents, and teachers across the country."
- "I grew up in a tiny town in rural Illinois. My parents did something very cool, they built a passive solar home they designed on top of a hill with some land around it. This shaped my childhood exploration and learning big time. I danced as a kid and had dreams of performing with a contemporary company. I got to travel a bit for small-time competitions I thought were bigger time than they really were. I always wanted to be in NYC to learn and absorb, so I moved here the first chance I got. I danced a bit at conservatory in Chicago and was introduced to yoga by my ballet teacher and mentor Rory Foster of American Ballet Theater. He brought in yoga for us bun heads for relaxation and stress reduction. I was hooked. I felt like a space ship explorer of unlimited potential in the class and wondered why everyone didn't do this amazing practice. I'm still on that space trip I think."
- "I've improved at how I work over the years and love the act of refining my approach. The last few years have been about planning for this next stage of family, maximizing time spent for the most meaningful impact, and shedding whatever projects and distractions that aren't necessary. Turned out I had much more space and freedom than I could possibly imagine and I was simply filling life with things to fill time because I thought I needed to. My business and family life have expanded in direct relation to this shift of action and it's mind-blowing to me."
- "Yes. We're super lucky. We have good friends who live close by with a wonderful 8-year-old who share a lot of our views and have been through what we're going through. My friend Lindsey Bliss has been a huge help and resource and shoulder to lean on during this time and we have several close buddies I've known since my early days in NYC that are family to me. I stay connected mostly to people who knew me before I had it as together as I do now. I cherish all my friends, but there is that comfortable family history of sorts there with old friends who you don't have to play catchup with. These relationships ground me. I can open the door, they come in, and we can watch a movie and nap together."
- "I stopped flying at 7.5 months and this is the longest I've been in one place for a decade. It feels strange, but is fun, too. I don't have anything planned for several months that I can't do from home or the occasional meeting. We have programs at the studio in the summer and and then the fall hits and we're off to Europe for Strala trainings and events. Baby passport! I'm excited to show her the world. We plan to keep her close and are lucky that with what we do, this is possible. Mike works with me and travels with me for the most part, even when it's a book event or something not Strala related. We're lucky to have this kind of freedom."
- "I feel a sense of joy and purpose about what I do. For me, being useful in this world on some level is everything."
- "A new book on leadership, called Guiding Strala, comes out in May. We're launching our new website, a year in the making, with a guide directory, easy access to the studios and partner programs, expanding our online video and content production, and a few other surprises I'm excited about."
- "I'm excited to help her be who she is meant to be in this world and share in her adventures. As for being nervous, honestly, labor for now seems pretty scary. I hope I'm strong enough and the process is healthy for us both. I'm in good hands with a great midwife practice and a birthing center. We have a birthing class coming up with my dear friend Lindsey Bliss's Carriage House practice. I'm sure learning more about the range of what can happen will put me at more ease."
- "I'm pumped for a girl, but would have excited for a boy also. I just knew she was a girl since the moment we decided to try to conceive. Kept seeing her around a bit." Tara wears a Marc by Marc sweater and Joe's jeans.
- "My grandmothers and mom and the aunts I grew up with are all super awesome. We did fun things as kids, were encouraged to be in nature a lot, and learned about the impact our actions have on the earth and others. I'm grateful that I had the freedom to be myself."
- "I 'found out' literally as we were packing for a 5-week, insanely busy work trip to Europe and Asia. Mike was like, 'You should take a test just in case.' We had been trying for a while after a miscarriage a few years ago. Several months before I conceived I decided to take more responsibility for myself this time around, slow my roll, prioritize self care, and simply do less. I started indulging in weekly shiatsu sessions with our good friend Sam Berlind, something the old me would never have made time for. Within a few months of the new behavior shift and discovering at-home ovulation tests so we had a more targeted go time, I was pregnant. But it was crazy timing. I felt fine, but a bit tired on the first part of the trip in Europe. My schedule was packed, so I'm sure this had loads to do with bringing on symptoms. Morning/all-day sickness hit me hard all through Asia and I was worried all the activity and travel would make this little one inside not want to stick around. Fortunately, she is very strong, and I regained my strength more when we were back in one place. We had a big chunk of travel in the second trimester, also for a Europe/Middle East trip, but we got smarter this time around and planned out a few days in between each event. We even had enough time to head to Ibiza for 10 days to swim and chill. The old me would have filled that open time with more to do. Now, I'm just hunkering down, baking cookies, knitting, doing simple things. And of course running to the bathroom every 5 minutes!"
- "I was pretty thin before, running around the planet fueled on coffee, green juice, and room service. I never got sick and was pretty healthy, amazingly. I figured I'd pack on some weight to make my body a better home for the little one and it took some time to build that base. I've gained 35 pounds and it feels kind of fun to have some size to me. I never had a booty or boobs before, so I'm enjoying that. I'm lucky I've had no body aches or pains. All the easygoing yoga I'm sure is to thank."
- "I'm devouring The Mindful Parent, a cool look into some of the world's happiest cultures and their parenting habits compared to ours in the West. I love that it sprinkles in the science that opens our eyes to how our habits affect the brain and psychological development of our children. Turns out respecting our children instead of screaming at them when they make mistakes creates a stronger, kinder, smarter individual and relationship on all fronts. Turns out holding a baby as much as possible fosters a healthy relationship, improved brain activity, and independence more than Ferberizing—or Fockerizing from Meet the Parents. It's an honest look at our values and has been mega inspiring."
- "We've got a great midwife at Central Park Midwifery and I plan to deliver with minimal intervention at the birthing center. The hospital is attached, which makes me feel safe in case of emergency."
- "You have more choice than you might know in how this can go."
- "Sam Berlind for shiatsu. Greenwich Hotel's Shibui Spa for a warm and cozy swim. Nice treatments, also."
- "How you move is the most important. Moving in a way that is nice to yourself, instead of in a way where you are working out yourself is an incredible shift and I believe makes the yoga healing and actually work. The magic is in you, not the poses. I love moving the whole body together instead of thinking of yoga as in isolated pose exercises. It becomes a flow that way, instead of a pose to pose goal situation. Spending 20 minutes every morning on my mat and simply moving how it feels great to me that day has made a huge difference. Anyone can do that." Tara wears Reebok yoga gear.
- "I skipped it for a spa date with my friend who is 3 weeks further along than me."
- "Who knows. I'm open, but no plans for the moment."
- "Someone in Hong Kong called what I was wearing 'Celestial Pop' last year and I thought that was just so rad and actually sounds like a style category! I am obsessed with bright colors, pop art, and space themes, but love to be cozy and things need to work from yoga, the plane, to a meeting or dinner, to, well, more yoga. Ha! If I can't sit on the floor in it, I don't wear it."
- "Well, my jean size has went up a bit! I've gotten a kick out of wearing some 'regular size' sweaters and shirts with the baby belly. I have all this wacky stuff from Tokyo's Harajuku neighborhood, like a fuzzy sweater with a picture of a bunny wearing a sweater on it. With the belly, it looks like the bunny (who I assume is male) is pregnant. Things like that crack me up. I have this giant hoodie dress that is for maternity. I got it when I was just a few months along and thought it looked ridiculous on. After growing a bit and the belly coming out, I'm living in it a lot. It's even more cozy than a onesie and easier bathroom access."
- "Cozy sports bras from my Reebok collab. We did a pop art thing a few seasons back I'm still wearing, in a size up. Also, leggings, sweats, and a few baggy sweaters have been on rotation. It's simplified things quite a bit for now actually. I love random things from Harajuku and always bring an extra bag to Tokyo to stock up on the crazy, colorful stuff. I love the bright and fun things from Marc Jacobs and have even more luck with my childish tastes at Marc by Marc. I have a few super cool things from Alexander Wang, but I can't go head-to-toe sleek or I just don't feel like myself. I'm fascinated with the wackiness and spacey vibe of Manish Arora and have a few pretty things from Herve Leger. I had the pleasure of meeting Lubov Azria last year. She is completely elegant and graceful and inspires me to stand up taller and walk without running into things."
- "We live in Soho, so we are surrounded by all the shops, but I find myself typically at Rag & Bone or A.P.C. or picking up something that grabs my attention on my travels."
- "Street art collabs are still pretty interesting to me. Although Soho and the East Village are looking a little manicured these days, there are always exciting artists making rad stuff. Kenny Scharf just launched some sort of clothing on his Insta. He's the original and I was hooked when I saw something of The Jetsons he did in a shop in Paris."
- "Ridiculously simple. I love baths, so work them in regularly, followed by body butter everywhere. Daily I don't wear much or any makeup. Loads of moisturizer, usually coconut oil or butter. I try to buy as natural as possible. If there is makeup, it's tinted moisturizer, curled lashes, mascara, and lip gloss."
- "Five to ten minutes of meditation in the morning, which is essential for setting my mood for the day. Daily yoga is a must also, even if only for 10-20 minutes. I walk everywhere. Stairs in airports, daily neighborhood walks, and that kind of thing. If I have a meeting in Midtown or even Brooklyn, I'll try to fit in time to walk. Any physical activity that's outdoors I love, but it's not a daily thing living in NYC. Snowboarding, hiking, and swimming are favorites when in a place where it can happen." Tara wears Reebok yoga gear.
