Father Essentials: Joey Gonzalez

Written by Erin Feher

With one more installment of Father Essentials to go before we turn it back over to the mamas, we knew we wanted a peek into the gym bag of fitness icon and Barry’s Bootcamp CEO Joey Gonzalez. The jet-setting papa sent us his list of essentials while at cruising altitude over the Atlantic—headed to Paris to celebrate the opening of the very first Barry’s in the City of Light, complete with an in-studio boutique stocked with an exclusive line of runway-worthy workout gear designed by Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing (a die-hard Barry’s loyalist). But when he’s home in L.A., Joey keeps it more low key—hanging with his husband Jonathan Rollo (chef, owner, and founder of organic restaurant chain Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop), kicking it with their kids, Frankie, 3, and Jake, 2, and even teaching a Saturday morning class at Barry’s in Venice. Joey shares with us what keeps him going strong, from the world’s best treadmill to his go-to meditation app to the hairdryer his whole family can’t live without. And of course, his current hoodie of choice: one of the limited-edition Rousteing X Barry’s designs—12 of which are currently available for auction, with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to Le Refuge, an organization that provides social, medical, psychological, and legal support to young boys and girls who are victims of homophobia and transphobia. See all of Joey’s Father Essentials below!

Sugar-Free Sweets. “ChocZero is the perfect treat to satisfy my sweet tooth—there is no sugar and only two net carbs per bar.” ChocZero 50% Dark Chocolate, $14.99 for 3 bags, Amazon.

Good Hair. “Oribe hair care is pretty much all Jonathan and I use at home and luckily at Barry’s as well. Liquid gold.” Oribe Products, $39 and up, Barneys New York.

Daily Meditation. “HeadSpace is my meditation app of choice. I do 10 to 15 minutes every day.” HeadSpace, free, iTunes or GooglePlay.

Shorts That Were Made for Me. Literally. “They are appropriately named the Joey short.” Joey Short, $56, Barry’s Shop.

Supersonic Hair Dryer. “Our hair dryer is a hot commodity. The four of us all use it! It’s sleek, powerful, and gets the job done in a very short amount of time, which is key when dealing with impatient 2 and 3 year olds.” Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, $369.99, Amazon.

Gummy Vitamins. “SmartyPants vitamins for my kids. They think it’s basically candy.” SmartyPants Kids Formula Daily Gummy Vitamins, $15.73, Amazon.

Book Starring My Kids. “We just ordered a book called Hooray Heroes, in which you can customize the protagonists of the story to be your children. Ours will be called The Adventures of Jake and Frankie. I think they’re going to love to hear stories about the two of them, and I’m hoping it encourages them to appreciate each other.” Hooray Heroes Personalized Books, $39, Hooray Heroes.

High-Tech Treadmill. “This is the Rolls Royce of treads and I wouldn’t run on anything else. I don’t even run outdoors any longer in an attempt to preserve my joints and get as much mileage as possible out of this body.” Woodway 4Front Treadmill, $7,499, Gym Experts.

Next-Level Baby Monitor. “Nest cams are everything.” Nest Security Camera, $143.79, Amazon.

Olivier Rousteing x Barry’s Hoodie. “For the perfect balance of fashion and function to and from the gym.” Limited Edition Graphic Zip-Up Custom Barry’s x Olivier Hoodie, $650 (current bid at time of publication, auction live through June 30), Barry’s Shop.
