Today, we travel to beautiful Laurel Canyon to meet up with an earth mama who’s got the California dream-living thing down pat. Meet Kari Jansen, owner of the popular herbal body care line Poppy And Someday, whose resume includes massage therapist, licensed herbalist, Ayurvedic practitioner, and single-mother to son Rowan, 9. Here, Jansen opens up her light-soaked, bohemian home, which is filled with unique and exotic treasures found during her travels, and chats all things alchemy and motherhood. Prepare to be inspired (can you say outdoor bathtub?) and get to clicking, below!
- “We moved from the Oakland hills to Laurel Canyon in L.A. eight years ago. I always find homes that are like tree houses, tucked away into a canyon and surrounded by nature. Laurel Canyon has a special energy that inspires me everyday. When I first looked at this house and the neighborhood, I knew it was my home. It has such a magical, peaceful energy.”
- “Bohemian, simple, and surrounded by plants and light.”
-
“I love simple, white walls with colorful fabrics, textiles, and moroccan rugs. Rugs are my favorite. I also always surround myself with lots of plants and crystals, which fill the room with lots of life and vibrance.”
Kari wears an Ozma dress.
- “It is close to the same. I just got a bigger dining room table, so it can be filled with legos and colored pencils.”
- “I love my living room. It is where my family and friends get comfortable and relax. It is filled with lots of natural light from french doors that open to the canyon.”
- “I love my traffic poster from The Fillmore West that I got when I lived in San Francisco. I love my hand-painted art of Indian goddess lovers that I found on my first trip to India. I love my Moroccan mirror in the hallway. Another thing I love is an exotic shelf made from an old Indian boat that I use to store my record collection.”
- “The dining room table. We work, play, and enjoy meals together there.”
- “Rowan does take over every room in the house, but I normally have him clean when the day ends. I like to keep each room clear of clutter, which can be difficult given how many legos he has. That said, I like to watch Rowan build lego sets and create on our dining room table. I often will let him leave his half-constructed sets there for a bit.”
- “We love tacos. It’s creative, as we’ll use fresh cabbage, radishes, avocado, cilantro, salt, and limes. Rowan loves chicken, so that is usually an ingredient as well. I love spices and use them often.”
- “I let him create it and enjoy it with freedom. At the moment, its walls are filled with Star Wars and Iron Man posters, and stickers. The floor is filled with Lego Batman sets.”
- “I love the Native American rug that we got on a trip in New Mexico on our way from Santa Fe to Taos. It brings me back to the memories of our road trips together. Rowan and I drove from L.A. to North Carolina and back a couple of summers ago. It was a magical trip across Route 66.”
- “I have a laid-back style and want there to always be laughter, music, and dancing filling my house. However, at the same time, I maintain structure and discipline.”
- “I can’t imagine life without a child. I love being a mom. It can be the hardest, most challenging thing ever, but it is also the most gratifying and rewarding. Before motherhood, I was more of a free-wandering spirit. Now, I am much more organized out of necessity. I make plans and lists and keep a calendar, none of which I thought I’d ever do.”
- “Seeing Rowan grow and change everyday. I love what each day brings.”
- “That it is going by too fast, and I’m going to miss it. He is already so grown-up. I’m not sure I will ever be ready when the time comes for him to leave the nest.”
- “Enjoy every moment; it goes so fast.”
- “I try and stay hydrated. I use so many oils on my face and body, as they ground me and bring vibrance to my skin. I also have an outside tub in my garden. It is a must for me to stay grounded.”
- “I wake up and have a meditative tea practice. After I walk Rowan and Sage to school, I like to go for a run or take a yoga class. Then I can focus on my day, and specifically my company, Poppy and Someday. I make herbal bodycare products in my studio connected to my house.”
-
“Earthy, comfortable, and simple. I love textures and the way clothes flow.”
Kari wears a Dôen dress and a hat she picked up in Tulum. Rowen wears tee from Filth Mart and Black Crane pants.
- “Yes, it has. I used to wear a lot of vintage and 70s-inspired clothes. Now, I wear more dresses and classic black.”
- “Jeans and a t-shirt.”
- “Jenni Kayne, Dôen (which captures the feeling of Laurel Canyon), Black Crane, Awave Awake (they have magical plant-dyed silk dresses), Ozma, and Christy Dawn. I also love vintage.”
- “I love high-waisted vintage jeans and cozy knit sweaters.”
- “I shop at the events I am involved with such as: Mercado Sagrado and Echo Park Craft Fair. They have all my favorite designers, and I love supporting my friends.”
- “I would love some new, light summer dresses, and I love Nico Nico for Rowan.”
- “I am an Ayurvedic practitioner, licensed herbalist, massage therapist, and I own and operate a herbal bodycare line called, Poppy and Someday. I provide treatments that help bring people back to balance. I use herbal infused oils, cups, hot rocks, tuning forks, crystal bowls, and cranial sacral in each treatment. I also add traditional Ayurvedic treatments like Shirohdara, which is warm oil dropped onto your third eye over a period of time which ultimately takes one into a deeply meditative and relaxing place. On the the days I am not with clients, I am hand-making herbal infusions and products.”
- “I became a massage therapist in 1998 and have been gathering healing modalities along my path, having formally studied Ayurveda, plant medicine, and sound therapies. Traveling and studying in India has been eye-opening for me and allowed me to explore their ancient healing treatments.”
- “I love healing and creating with my hands.”
- “Motherhood keeps me balanced, so I don’t overwork. It allows me to be present with Rowan and enjoy each moment with him.”
- “I had to get help and hire people. It has been an amazing experience to watch my business grow like it has.”
- “I have an amazing community of beautiful and supportive women. I am blessed to have found such an inspiring community of like-minded souls.”
- “As long as I continue to grow and stay inspired, everything will take care of itself. With that, I would love to expand Poppy and Someday, and keep coming up with new herbal and magical products.”
- “Rowan is a magical tree in Ireland. Merlin made his wands from the Rowan tree. It is a strong tree with beautiful leaves and vibrant berries.”
- “Lego Batman, playing drums, basketball, and building any lego sets he can get his hands on.”
- Just look at those baby blues!
- “The biggest surprise about having a child is everyday is never boring. Time moves so fast. I can’t believe Rowan is nine. It was only yesterday that he was my baby. Enjoy every moment.”
- “He has a wild spirit, and loves to get dirty and explore. We love taking adventures of all kinds together.”
- “I do notice myself sounding like my mother more and more everyday. I catch myself saying, ‘because I said so’ every now and then. My mother is such a kind and generous soul, and I get that from her, but my house is a lot messier than her house.”
- “My ‘mom friends’ who have their own inspiring small businesses like me including: Bunni, who owns Zenbunni Chocolates with her family, and Shiva Rose, who has an inspiring blog called 'The Local Rose’ and a beautiful body care line called 'Shiva Rose Beauty’.”
- “I never really read parenting books. I try to just take each moment as it comes.”
- Talk about an essential oils collection.
- “Take time for yourself. Have a self-care practice.”
- “Balance is key. Make sure to take time for yourself.”
-
“I wish I was better at balance. I feel like sometimes I lose sight of life’s everyday joys.”
Kari wears a vintage tank and vintage Levi's. Rowen wears Nico Nico shorts.
- “Maybe—I would love a girl.”
- “Taking an adventure somewhere, long or far away, easy or difficult to complete. I love to constantly see and experience new and exciting things.”
- “I do love living in LA. The sun is so warm and healing. My community is so vibrant and inspiring.”
- “I love the exposure he gets. We get to take roads trips to the beach, desert, or Ojai and explore the magic that surrounds Southern California.”
- The perfect denim.
- “Sure, someday.”
- “I love Sundays, as it is our farmer’s market day. We spend the afternoon tasting yummy fruits and collecting plants for the garden.”
- “I like to take trips to Ojai to take Rowan to the hot springs. I take him to the beach on warm days or just walk around Venice. I also love taking Rowan and his friends to the Griffith Observatory. The planetarium shows are so fun to lay back, look up and watch the stars, and learn about space. It's such a magical time. ”
