We Tried It: Motif’s New Luna Breast Pump, Designed To Pump More In Less Time

It’s not every day that a product actually accomplishes what it sets out to do. But when it comes to Motif Medical‘s new Luna breast pump—which claims to pump more milk in less time—we have been pleasantly surprised.

Built with modern moms in mind, the Motif Luna boasts a compact, quiet, and sleek design—including soft LED lights that are just bright enough for nighttime pumping sessions—two modes of milk expression, and a closed system (which means no milk or condensation ends up in the tubes), amongst other special features.

One of the staffers at MOTHER tried out the pump herself (after using wearable pump designs) and has found Motif‘s claim to be true. Although using the hospital-grade pump does require being plugged in (while offering portability of a car adapter for on-the-go pumping), she’s now pumping for less time (in her case 13-18 minutes) and getting more milk in that amount of time (6 ounces with the Luna, compared to 4 ounces with other wearable models).

And her experience isn’t unique. Motif Medical recently worked with C + R Research on a study that tracked 20 moms around the U.S., asking them to switch to the Motif Luna for two weeks and report back. The moms overwhelmingly favored the Luna over two other leading pump styles currently on the market, with 9 out of 10 mothers expressing that Luna‘s performance trumped the others. Meanwhile, 5 out of 6 moms surveyed said they got more milk in less time with the Luna. The group included a mix of first-time moms, veteran moms, SAHMs, moms working outside the home, and a few on maternity leave. All of the mothers used a breast pump a minimum of 4 1/2 times a week.

Other rave reviews that came from the study: The Luna is comfortable to use and doesn’t pinch one’s nipples like other models, the Luna has just the right amount of variety in functions, it’s easy to assemble, and of course the biggie—the Luna has the ability to express equal or more milk in a shorter amount of time compared to other pumps.
