Mother Essentials: Beth Leipholtz
Written by Katie Hintz-Zambrano
As an inclusion and accessibility advocate—and the hearing mom of a deaf child—Beth Leipholtz is deeply passionate about building a more accepting world for all kids. After her son’s Waardenburg Syndrome diagnosis as a baby, she dove headfirst into learning about Deaf culture and bilingual parenting. Lucky for us, she’s been sharing that journey ever since across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, where she’s built a community of over 2 million people passionate about disability inclusion and everyday advocacy.
This week, she’s releasing an updated version of her 2023 book, The ABCs of Inclusion, which now features the stories of 26 real kids with 26 different diagnoses, fresh illustrations, and updated copy with added insights for families.
Based in Minnesota with her husband and now 6-year-old son Cooper (who is just as sweet as he is expressive—watch one video and you’ll see what we mean)—Beth is a longtime CrossFit enthusiast, iced coffee devotee (even in subzero temps!), and lover of photography and books. Below, she shares the everyday Mother Essentials that keep her grounded, inspired, and moving—literally and figuratively.
The ABCs of Inclusion. “This book is one of my babies! I wrote it after navigating our own journey with my son’s diagnosis. It serves as a great tool to introduce children to autism, hearing differences, epilepsy, Down syndrome, and more than a dozen other diagnoses.” The ABCs of Inclusion: A Disability Inclusion Book For Kids via Amazon, Bookshop, and Barnes & Noble.
Kindle Paperwhite. “I don’t know how I ever lived without this. The fact that it is water-resistant makes it perfect for vacations and sitting poolside, and as a fast reader I love knowing I always having something on hand.” Kindle Paperwhite, $169.99, Amazon.
Asics. “These are my all-time favorite running and daily activity shoes. They are incredibly comfortable and supportive but also come in a variety of colors.” Gel Nimbus 27, $165, Asics.
PokPok. “We love this app. It is Montessori-based based so it’s not overly loud or overwhelming. Cooper especially loves the dot grid where he can create different shapes and fill them in. They are always releasing new toys within the app which keeps it fresh.” PlayPokPok.com
Home Laminator. “After Cooper started bringing home artwork and school projects, I decided I wanted a way to protect them beyond just keeping the paper. It’s super easy to pop them in a laminator sheet and keep them safe from the elements.” Scotch TL901X Thermal Laminator, $39.99, Amazon.
Monos Backpack. “I will shout about this backpack for years to come. I call it my mobile office. As someone who works from various coffee shops and remote locations, I am able to keep literally everything I need for the day in here. There are so many different pockets and organization aspects and it fits so much more than it looks like it would.” Metro Backpack, $215, Monos.
Walking Pad. “This walking pad is a lifesaver on days when I don’t have time to get to the gym but need to move my body. I am someone who cannot sit still all day long, so I keep this at my office along with a stand-up desk. That way I can move while still being productive.” Lichico Walking Pad, $109.99, Amazon.
CRZ Yoga Shorts. “These are the comfiest, most buttery feeling shorts and leggings I own. They are a fraction of the cost of similar brands and hold up incredibly well over time.” CRZ YOGA Womens ButterLuxe Biker Shorts, $24, Amazon, and SecretSculpt Leggings, $32, Amazon.
Barebell Protein Bars. “Is it bad to say these makeup about half of my diet? Kidding (sort of). I am picky when it comes to protein bars and these are the perfect combination of crunch along with a soft middle that doesn’t feel gritty. The chocolate dough ones are especially good.” Barebells Protein Bars, $9.34, Walmart.
VaniCream. “As someone with fairly sensitive skin, I switched to this cleanser this year and have loved it. It’s very gentle and the accompanying moisturizer works well also.” Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser, $8.86, Walmart.
Watercolors. “This is an activity Cooper and I got into this year and something that we can do together. We have various palettes and brushes. We love watching tutorial videos together and seeing what we can create.” ARTISTRO Watercolor Paint Set, $17.99, Amazon.
CrossFit. “This is what keeps me sane. I have been doing CrossFit for 8 years and it is still a vital part of my daily routine. I typically go over the lunch hour and it’s a great way to break up my day.” CrossFit.com
Iced Coffee. “Even when it’s negative 20° in Minnesota, you will find me holding an iced coffee. I tend to forget that I have a drink at times, so when I get hot coffee it ends up being cold anyway. With cold coffees, I can just kind of sip on them all day long.”
Delta AmEx for Travel. “As someone who loves to travel, having the Delta American Express card has been a great decision. I’m able to earn miles for money that I’m spending anyway and get access to various perks.” Delta.com
