Mother Essentials: Joyce Lee

Written by Katie Hintz-Zambrano

It’s been a while since we properly caught up with mama of two Joyce Lee. We first interviewed the style-savvy Brooklynite in 2018 when she was the head of design at Madewell and pregnant with her second child. In the seven years that have passed, her two kiddos (Poppy, 10, and Kai, 6) are now way beyond the preschool and nursery phase (in fact, they’ve settled into proper bunkbeds). Meanwhile, Joyce has pivoted from a full-time role to design and creative consultancy work. For the past few years she’s been sprinkling her design talents across various projects—including a Substack newsletter and the just-launched World of Crow x Joyce Lee line of breezy mommy-and-me wares for the warm months ahead. Find out more about her latest launch—plus her other stylish Mother Essentials—below.

Rothy’s Clogs. “I love these so much, I have two pairs! One stays at home as my go-to for ultimate comfort, while the other is perfect for school pickups and relaxed weekends. They’re incredibly cushy—like walking on clouds.” The Casual Clog, $159, Rothy’s.

Ilia Multi-Stick in Whisper. “Who doesn’t love a multi-tasking product? I use this every day on both my lips and cheeks, and it’s even kid-friendly! I never feel guilty dabbing a little on my daughter’s cheeks.” Multi-Stick, $36, Ilia.

True Botanicals Bronze-Well Regenerative Glow Drops. “These drops are amazing—they nourish my skin while giving me a natural, sun-kissed glow. I like to let them absorb before applying makeup for a touch of that effortless vacation vibe.” Bronze Well Regenerative Glow Drops, $102, True Botanicals.

Owala FreeSip Waterbottles. “These water bottles have become a favorite for both my kids and me! The design lets you sip through a straw or chug with a quick flip of the lid—so convenient to have both options in one. And I love the fun color combinations too.” Owala FreeSip Water Bottle, $30, Urban Outfitters.

UNO Flip. “We play a lot of UNO at home, and the kids recently discovered the Flip version—it’s like two games in one. I also keep it in my bag for those moments when we need a quick and easy activity.” UNO Flip, $7, Amazon.

World of Crow x Joyce Lee Olive Dress. “This dress is part of a capsule I designed in collaboration with World of Crow. The fabrics were hand-loomed and dyed with natural dyes, and I love that it can be worn loose and relaxed, or tied in the front or back for a waisted shape.” NY Olive Dress, $370, World of Crow x Joyce Lee.

World of Crow x Joyce Lee Polka Dot Set. “This is one of my favorite prints in the collection—the kids’ bubble top is super summery and fun and the matching skirt has built-in shorts!” Polka Dot Skirt, $90, and Top, $90, World of Crow x Joyce Lee.

BjornQorn Popcorn. “Our whole family fights over this popcorn—there’s no better tasting option. I keep it in my bag as an emergency snack, and we devour it during our family movie nights.” BjornQorn Classic (12-Pack), $46, BjornQorn.

BonBon Candy. “I take my kids to this candy shop in our neighborhood, often before we hit the movie theater. We make our own mixes, and I always load up on the sour gummies.” Sour Mix, $14, BonBon.

Parker Thatch Jack Bag in Oxblood. “This bag holds my whole life. The leather is so soft and feels worn-in and well-loved. I tend to also carry a smaller bag inside of it, so I’m always ready for anything, even when I find myself on a grocery run without my grocery bags.” Jack Bag, $898, Parker Thatch.

Ruadh Constance Jacket. “This has become one of my favorite third pieces. It’s perfect for running around during the day and just as great for dressing up a bit for an evening out. I especially love the drawstring at the waist—it adds a nice variation in shape and proportion.” The Constance Jacket, $780, Ruadh.

SuperEgg Hand Cream. “I always carry hand cream in my bag, and this one is a favorite. I love its subtle fragrance, the perfect formula for just the right amount of moisture, and the chic packaging.” This Moment Hand Care, $30, SuperEgg.

Ghia Original Apertif. “On evenings when I skip the wine, my go-to is a Ghia Apéritif with a splash of soda. I love the way the bright yuzu pairs with its subtle bitterness.” Original Apertif, $38, Ghia.

Celine AirPod Case. “On a recent trip to Milan, I purchased this as a treat for myself. I’d been wanting a nice case for my airpods, and the little clip is so handy for attaching to a bag or directly onto my jeans belt loop.” Airpods Case in Calfskin, $590, Celine.

Eva Masaki Chiyo Sunglasses. “My friend Eva creates these beautiful frames, and I have them in both sunglasses and optical variations.” Chiyo Dragon, $385, Eva Masaki.

L.L.Bean Tote With Stenciled Letters. “I’m a total bag lady—I’ve always loved collecting totes! Over the years, I’ve personalized many L.L.Bean Boat Totes for friends.” Boat Tote, $29.99, L.L.Bean, stenciling by Joyce Lee.

Leisurely Lunches With Girlfriends. “One of the best perks of a flexible work schedule is the freedom to enjoy a leisurely, indulgent lunch with a friend—right in the middle of the week. I love exploring new restaurants in Manhattan and savoring the chance to catch up on life. It’s always refreshing and rejuvenating.”
